“How great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth

Guardian Angel Prayers – Table of Contents

Many believers are familiar with the idea of angels. God has assigned a guardian angel to every human soul from the beginning of our earthly lives until the hour of our death. Guardian angels show us how near God is to His people and how active He is in human history (Catechism of the Catholic Church 336).

While accompanying us on earth, angels constantly look upon the face of God. In doing so, they worship Him and intercede for us in times of temptation and trial, helping us on our pilgrim journey to Heaven.

St. Thomas Aquinas explains that angels cannot impact us directly, given our nature as free beings. Still, they can place sentiments and images in our imagination that direct us away from sin and inspire us toward God.

“From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” (CCC 336)

Devotion to the Holy Angels brings grace to your life through devout gratitude to God for gifting heavenly angels at our service, peace in facing troublesome life circumstances, and protection in pursuing the Lord.

Guardian angel prayers have their roots in Scripture.

Angels in Scripture

There are numerous references to angels that appear in many places in the Bible:

  • In the Book of Daniel, Michael is described as “the great prince who has charge of your [Daniel’s] people” (Dan. 12:1).
  • In the Gospels, Jesus indicates that there are guardian angels for individuals, including little children. “He says: see that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 18:10).
  • In the Book of Revelation, Michael is referred to as the angel who threw Satan down from heaven, and he is known as our defender in spiritual battle. “Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.” (Revelation 12:7-9)

Following in the footsteps of generations of faithful, including saints, many people today draw strength by asking for the intercession of their guardian angel through prayer.

Guardian Angel Prayer for Healing

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Guardian Angels Prayer Before a Trip

Dear St. Raphael, your lovely name means “God heals.” The Lord sent you to young Tobias to guide him throughout a long journey. Upon his return you taught him how to cure his father’s blindness. How natural, therefore, for Christians to pray for your powerful help for safe travel and a happy return. This is what we ask for ourselves as well as for all who are far from home.

Amen

St. Gertrude’s Prayer to One’s Guardian Angel
Written by St. Gertrude in the 14th century

O Most holy Angel of God, appointed by God
to be my guardian, I give thee thanks for all the
benefits which thou hast ever bestowed on me in
body and soul. I praise and glorify thee that thou
condescended to assist me with such patient
fidelity, and to defend me against all the
assaults of my enemy. Blessed be the hour in
which thou were assigned me for my guardian,
my defender and my patron. In acknowledgment
and return for all thy loving ministries to me, I
offer thee the infinitely precious and noble Heart
of Jesus, and firmly purpose to obey thee
henceforward, and most faithfully to serve
my God.

Amen.

Padre Pio’s Guardian Angel Prayer

Oh, my Holy guardian Angel, care for my soul and my body.

Enlighten my mind that I may better know the Lord my God and love Him with all my heart.

Watch over me when I pray so I won’t give into life’s distractions.

Sustain me with your counsel as I live as righteous Christian, and help me to do good works with a giving heart.

Protect me from the cunning of the adversary, and lift me up when I am being tempted so I may win the fight against evil.

Stay beside me at all times, never stop watching over me until I’m called back to the father’s house, where we will praise together our Great God for all eternity. Amen.

Amen.

A Mother’s Prayer to her Children’s Guardian Angels

I humbly salute thee,
O thee faithful,
Heavenly Friends of my children!

I give thee heartfelt thanks
for all the love and goodness thou hast shown them.

At some future day I shall,
with thanks more worthy than I can now give, repay your care for them,
and before the whole heavenly court
acknowledge their indebtedness to thy guidance and protection.

Continue to watch over them, I beseech thee and provide for all their needs of body and soul.

Pray, likewise, for me, for my husband,
and my whole family, that we may all one day rejoice in thy blessed company.

Amen.
