He was one of Jesus’s twelve disciples, though he is only <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+14%3A22-23&amp;version=NRSV">quoted</a> once in the <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray-the-gospels/">Gospels</a> (see above). While called Judas in the Gospel of John, he is known by Jude to avoid confusion with Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus, as John points out in his Gospel. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Many people have become more familiar with St. Jude through watching the popular TV show "The Chosen," in which actor <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4544348/">Giavani Cairo</a> portrays Jude Thaddeus. He wrote Jesus a letter, asking for a miracle. Jesus responded to King Abgar that he would send one of his disciples to heal him. Then, Jesus impressed his face onto a cloth for St. Jude to transport to King Abgar. Upon receiving the cloth, King Abgar was healed. Today, St. Jude is often depicted with the same “image of Edessa” on a medallion around his neck.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="st-jude-martyr">Martyrdom &amp; modern popularity</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">St. Jude continued ministering in Persia and was martyred in Persia alongside St. Simon. The two Saints share the same feast day (October 28th) and are buried together in the crypt beneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">He was <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Jude-Apostle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">popularized</a> in prayer for desperate causes in the late 18th century in western Europe. Nowadays, many know St. Jude as the namesake of children’s research hospitals across the United States. In the fall of 2023, a relic of St. Jude toured the U.S., <a href="https://thecountypress.mihomepaper.com/articles/st-jude-relics-visit-immaculate-conception/">making stops in 100 different cities</a>. In 1521, the Spanish saint and nobleman had his leg shattered by a <a href="https://www.jesuits.org/stories/with-ignatius-at-montserrat/">cannonball</a> in the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-Pamplona">Battle of Pamplona</a>. He never had a successful surgery yet still decided to begin his pilgrimage on horseback to Montserrat, Spain (with the intention of traveling to Jerusalem). He ended up living in a cave near Montserrat in a town called Manresa for almost a year.
