In the United States, the National Day of Prayer in 2025 is May 1.

This American tradition is actually older than America itself, dating back to the Second Continental Congress, before the Declaration of Independence.

Before America was born, it was already steeped in a tradition of prayer!

This tradition continues in modern America each year, with the president proclaiming the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer.

Hallow is excited to recognize National Day of Prayer with actual words of prayer from holy men and women throughout the ages. Hear the voices of St. John Paul II, Padre Pio, Mother Teresa and others leading prayers.

National Day of Prayer History

On June 12, 1775, the Second Continental Congress recognized the importance of prayer across the colonies, saying, “We may, with united hearts and voices, unfeignedly confess and deplore our many sins, and offer up our Joint supplications to the all- wise, omnipotent, and merciful Disposer of all events.”

One could argue that the National Day of Prayer is older than America itself!

Twenty-two years later, President John Adams further built on the tradition of a single day focused on prayer (and fasting):

“I have therefore thought fit to recommend, and I do hereby recommend, that Wednesday, the 9th day of May next, be observed throughout the United States as a day of solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer.”

President Truman issued a proclamation in 1952 formally instituting National Day of Prayer, and it’s been an annual occurrence since. In 2022, President Biden encouraged Americans to find in our hearts and prayers the determination to put aside our differences, come together, and truly see one another as fellow Americans” in his proclamation.

National Day of Prayer in Different States

Prayer coordinators in each state help facilitate National Day of Prayer activities in local communities nationwide.

In addition to the national proclamations, each state recognizes the Day with its own proclamation.

And sometimes, that takes place on a different day than the official National day.

For example, New Jersey recognized the Day on Friday, May 5, 2023, a day after most other places.

Prayer for 2025 National Day of Prayer

Here’s an excerpt from the lengthy official prayer published by the National Day of Prayer Task Force:

Lord, Your way is perfect, You lead us on paths of righteousness for Your name's sake. Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Your Word is Truth, instructing and inspiring us to live in the abundant life You gave when You saved us from the death and destruction of the enemy. Fill us with Truth as we read, study, and live Your Word.

God, You are a shield for all those who take refuge in You. As we abide in You and Your Word abides in us, we take up our shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God and run boldly into the darkness to Lift Up the Word and Light Up the World! In the Mighty name of Jesus we pray, amen!

Pray With Hallow on National Day of Prayer

With the Day centered on being united in prayer, Hallow has invited several of our partners in inviting people around the country to pray together in our “Pray With Me” campaign. We also invite you to join us in praying today with deceased holy men and women from all ages in the new Original Voices collection on the app.

Catholic education in America predates America itself.

Ursuline Academy, a high school, first opened its doors in New Orleans in 1727, but it would be another 50+ years until America had its first Catholic college.

Georgetown University traces its roots back to 1789, and in the nearly 250 years since then, many other Catholic colleges and universities have contributed to the mission of Catholic education in America.

Today, Hallow celebrates the impact—spanning centuries—that these institutions have made by recognizing the oldest Catholic college or university that is still operational in every state:

Midwest Home to Several ‘Bi-Centennial’ Schools

Some of the oldest Catholic colleges in the U.S. are found in the Midwest.

Louisville’s Spalding University (1814) and Missouri’s Saint Louis University (1818) have been providing Catholic education in their respective communities for more than 200 years each.

Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, has been around since 1839. The Hawkeye State is also home to other acclaimed, long-standing Catholic colleges, including Clarke University (1843), St. Ambrose University (1882), and Mercy College of Health Sciences (1899).

St. Xavier University in Chicago is the oldest operational Catholic college in Illinois, having opened in 1846–just 14 years before Quincy University opened 300 miles away in Quincy, Ill.

In Indiana, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has operated since Saint Mother Theodore Guerin founded it in 1840. Notre Dame (1842), St. Mary’s College (1844), and Marian University (1851) are among other stalwarts of Catholic education in the Hoosier State.

Oldest and Only

In some states with a smaller footprint of Catholic post-secondary education, the oldest Catholic college is also the only Catholic college.

Maine’s St. Joseph’s College has been around since 1912 and is the only Catholic college in the Pine Tree State.

Similarly, Chaminade University, founded in 1955, represents Hawaii’s only Catholic college. The Dakotas have one Catholic College each: the University of Mary (1959) in North Dakota and Mount Mary University (1951) in South Dakota.

Belmont Abbey College, which first opened in 1876, is North Carolina’s lone Catholic college. Since 2007, Wyoming been home to a Catholic institution of higher learning: Wyoming Catholic College.

Mount St. Mary’s Still Going Strong

Mount St. Mary’s University is the second oldest Catholic college still in operation. Founded in 1808 in Emmitsburg, Md., it has educated future congress members, Supreme Court justices, professional athletes and coaches, not to mention bishops, archbishops, priests, and martyrs.

It shows no signs of slowing down. In May 2023, it graduated 616 students and featured alum Todd Bowles, the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as a commencement speaker.

Some States Lack a Catholic College

Ten states currently lack any Catholic college or university: Delaware, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska.

This hasn’t always been the case. Oklahoma lost St. Gregory’s University in 2017. In Arkansas, Little Rock College, a Catholic institution, closed in 1930. New Mexico’s only Catholic college shut its doors in 2009.

Delaware has been without a Catholic college since 1867, when St. Mary’s College closed after 20 years.

In other places, however, Catholic education is taking root.

In Arizona, through a partnership with Arizona State University, the University of Mary now offers Catholic post-secondary education in Tempe.

Benedictine University is also a relatively new Catholic college in Arizona, which has a large (and growing) Catholic population. Catholic University of America now has a presence in Arizona (Tucson) as well.

In Wyoming, Wyoming Catholic College became the state’s first ever Catholic college in 2007.

The last few months have been an absolute whirlwind. God has us on a crazier ride than I ever could’ve imagined. This Lent, Hallow was the first faith-based app to ever crack the top 10 apps in the App Store overall coming in at #3 - beating Netflix, Spotify, Instagram, Amazon, Tiktok, YouTube and so many more of the largest apps in the world. It took us almost two years from launching Hallow to get to 1 million prayers prayed in total on the app. This Lent we had over a million prayers prayed each day. We just crossed 225 million prayers prayed in total and, as of last week, now over 10 million downloads.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. All credit belongs to Him and to the incredible team of folks we have working so hard here at Hallow.

We’ve also been humbled and blessed to be able to close an additional $50 million Series C fundraise bringing the total funding raised for Hallow to $105 million. The round was led by Goodwater Capital, the largest consumer tech-only venture fund in the world that also happens to be founded by two incredible men of faith and explicitly rooted in the mission of Micah 6:8: “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” The name Goodwater comes from the combination of Good News and Living Water, reflecting their mission to empower entrepreneurs to change the world for good.

Every decision we’ve made in building Hallow has resulted from deep prayer and conversation with our faith advisors, and this new round is no different (read more about our structure as a Public Benefit Corporation here).

This round and these milestones are exciting. We’re thrilled to partner together with mission-driven partners, team members (we’re hiring! Join our team here) and creators to invest even more heavily in building an experience that helps the world to build a daily habit of prayer. But with each of these milestones, something has become more and more clear over time.

This is not why we do this. The numbers are not what we’re working for. It’s not the vision for Hallow.

The vision for Hallow is not numbers, but individuals - not millions of downloads, but each one of us as children of God. The vision for Hallow is Sarah.

Sarah is a young married mom of three little girls. She became tragically addicted to alcohol and stimulants and was involved in a longstanding affair. She’d never really taken her faith very seriously. Her husband found out about the affair and left. She was alone, ashamed, and depressed - thinking often she’d be better off dead. She saw a post about the app and something moved her. She figured she might as well give it a try. She realized, she told us, that in her darkest hour - when everyone she knew had left, everything she cared about had been destroyed - that the only person there with her in the darkness was Christ. She began praying with the app over a dozen times a day. And in her words, He picked her broken pieces up off the floor and put her together again. She cut off the affair. She got sober for the first time in years. She prayed for her husband’s miraculous forgiveness and, in his own experience in adoration, he forgave her. Their family has been reunited.

She told us, “I know you probably get these stories all the time, but I just wanted to let you know, that if you never do anything else in your life, please know that you saved me. I don’t think I’d be standing here alive today if it were not for this app and the grace that God gave me through it.”

This is why we do this. This is what we’re working for. This is the vision for Hallow.

If we spend the next 30 years and are able to be a part of just one more person like Sarah’s journey back to God, if we help God reach out to just one more of His lost ones…then it will have all been infinitely worth it.

And I don’t think Sarah is alone. I think there are millions and millions of Sarah’s. Honestly, I think we’re all a bit like Sarah in our own way. We’re all a little lost. We’re all a little stuck. We’re all a little bit further from God than He invites us to be.

But our faith is one of hope. And if there’s anything that this experience has taught me, it’s that there is no valley that God cannot reach. There is no darkness that the Light cannot overcome.

In 2021, COVID precautions caused Lent to look a little different than normal. The Vatican announced modifications to the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday, replacing the usual application of an ash cross by a thumb with a “sprinkling” of ashes on the head.

The ritual application of ashes dates back to ancient Jewish tradition and serves two main purposes: to remind us of our physical death (and therefore our need for God) and to serve as a form of public penance.

The ashes received at mass are sacramentals that draw their sanctification from the blessed palms from which they are made and the blessing received from a priest. As such, they are uniquely physical.

Last year, with many churches providing limited services and with many Catholics still quarantining, many Catholics were unable to receive ashes, and even fewer had the opportunity to publicly embrace their penance.

In response, Hallow announced the launch of a digital “AshTag” effect on both Facebook and Instagram, something we are excited to offer again in 2024.

Ashes signify mourning, grief, and repentance, the start of our Lenten journey that calls us to turn away from sin and toward God. Ashes can also signify death as in ‘ashes to ashes, dust to dust' and our intent to die to our worldly desires and live even more in Christ’s image.

Rather than an exercise in vanity, publicly wearing ashes allows Catholics around the world to embrace humility in penance as part of a community of faith.

What better place to embrace solidarity with the global Church than on social media.

By pairing digital ashes with the hashtag “#ashtag” (and this year, #ashtag2024) we are literally connected together in a discoverable and shareable way.

Whenever we make public proclamations of penance or prayer, especially on social media, there is always the very real temptation of pride. Proclaiming holiness outwardly while internally feeding into our egos is sinful hypocrisy.

One way of ensuring we embrace a true spirit of humility while embracing our faith online is to combine it with physical and spiritual acts of repentance.

During Lent, we are specifically called toward prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

When you post your digital ashes, say a prayer for someone in your life who is struggling. Fast from social media for the rest of the day (or even for the rest of Lent). Make an anonymous donation to a local charity. Seek out Confession.

We’re thrilled to share a ton of great news for the Hallow mission! We just passed 1.5 million downloads, 25 million prayers completed, 35,000 five star reviews, raised additional funding from some phenomenal new partners, added some world-class folks to our advisory board, and are hiring for a bunch of great new roles!

It is incredibly humbling to think of how far God has taken our mission of prayer in such a short time (for those who haven’t heard the Hallow story, it’s here). Getting to journey alongside the Hallow community on the path to finding peace in God is the great privilege of our lives. And the stories that fellow community members have shared remind us each day of the amazing work that God is doing through this mission:

“Hallow, through God, has changed my life! I was on the brink of depression then I discovered meditation and your app and… I’m a different person. It’s such a beautiful feeling to feel happy, whole, abundant...free from chains of addiction, anger, resentment, sadness… I can’t even describe it!”

Praise God. The last two and a half years have been an unbelievable ride. But the exciting news is that we’re just getting started: we’re growing as fast as we ever have with 700% more prayers started on the app this month than during the same time last year.

And that means we have a lot more work to do. We believe that the idea behind Hallow - re-introducing the world to the beauty, peace, and centuries-old traditions of the Church’s spirituality - has the opportunity to change the world.

More than ever, our world is tired. We’re exhausted by the pandemic, tired of politics, depressed by the suffering and pain in the world, stressed with juggling child care and work, made anxious by our addictions, large and small. We are looking for rest, for peace, for a light amidst all of this darkness.

The good news is that we believe there is a place to find this light: in silence.

“In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you… Souls of prayer are souls of great silence”
Mother Teresa

And it is in that silence and prayer, that God is reaching out to each of us - to those of us who are already praying each day but feel like we’re just going through the motions, to those of us who have fallen away from our faith, to those of us who might be interested in spirituality, but have never tried to pray, to those of us struggling with stress and anxiety or wading through grief and loss, God is there. He’s knocking on the door of our hearts - inviting us into a real and life-changing relationship with Him, inviting us into His peace.

Mark-Mary, Matt Fradd, David Henrie, Dr. Sri, Fr. Josh Johnson, Lizzie Velasquez, Laura Fanucci, and so many more. But we still have so much to do.

Every day, we get an enormous number of requests from Hallow community members for more beautiful prayer and meditation content, more ways to connect as a community, more partnerships with amazing mission-driven creators, and especially for more languages and guide options.

Today, we’re excited to share that we’ve partnered with some amazing investors (Drive Capital, Peter Thiel, Susa Ventures, Teamworthy Ventures, Uncork Capital, Narya VC, Contrary Capital, General Catalyst, Jim Perry, and Scott Malpass - the only American appointed by Pope Francis to sit on the board of the Vatican Bank) in a new $40 million round of funding for Hallow. This Series B funding follows our $12 million Series A earlier this year led by General Catalyst, bringing the total raised this year to $52 million.

With this new funding, we’re thrilled to be able to invest more quickly in building out a world-class app, adding more Hallow content, and in making more of the content available for free. We continue to build out a world-class, mission-driven team (we’re hiring!!), and to invest in reaching out to a broader audience of folks, not just those who go to Mass every week, but to anyone who’s searching for God - especially those who may have fallen away from their faith.

Every decision we’ve made, from our structure as a public-benefit corporation to our pricing model to this new round of funding, has been the result of deep prayer and consultation with our spiritual advisors to further our mission of helping the world to grow closer to God.

In the spirit of this prayerful discernment and guidance, we’re thrilled to also be able to share our new advisory board led by Bishop Kevin Rhoades and made up of amazing folks like Fr. Kevin Grove & Dr. John Cavadini from the University of Notre Dame, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Steve Gunrow from Word on Fire, Scott Malpass, Dean Abela from the Catholic University of America, Laura Fanucci, Lisa Hendey, and Sr. Jaime Mitchell.

In building Hallow, our first goal is to act as a tool for the Church’s mission. We’ll continue to rely heavily on this board to make sure that Hallow always stays 100% authentically Catholic and aligned with the Church.

We believe there are a lot more people out there searching for a connection to something bigger, for a deeper sense of peace, or for a closer relationship with God. If we can help just one of them to start a conversation with God - to discover His love and His peace - it will have all been worth it.

Pray the Rosary in the ancient language of Latin with Fr. Matthew Schuster, associate pastor at St. John Cantius (Chicago, IL), on Hallow.

What is the Latin Rosary?

Tradition holds that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1221 and revealed the Rosary to him in the Church's universal language: Latin. After Mary's apparition, St. Dominic shared this devotion with others to meditate on the mysteries of Christ's life. Many also believe that the historical origin of the Rosary lies in the monastic practice of reciting 150 Psalms each week. Today, many believers pray the Rosary in their native tongues, but you can also pray it in its original language.

Most Wednesdays, Pope Francis holds a General Audience at the Vatican. For several months, he has spoken on the catechesis of prayer. On Wednesday, April 28th, Pope Francis gave the 31st audience of this catechesis, and he focused on something near and dear to us at Hallow: meditation.

You can read the full audience transcript here, or watch the video recording here, but we are sharing three key takeaways from Pope Francis, applicable to your prayer life and time spent in meditation with the Hallow App.

1. Catholic meditation leads us outside of ourselves

It is so easy to rush through the day, hurrying from one place to another. Pope Francis asks us to slow down, take a breath, and be still. “We have an inner life that cannot always be trampled on.” In these moments, when we tend to our inner life, we are meditating on something greater than and outside of ourselves: our Creator. Pope Francis tells us, “For us Christians, meditating is a way to encounter Jesus. And in this way, only in this way, we rediscover ourselves.” Catholic meditation leads us not only into introspection but more so to the true knowledge of Christ.

2. Meditation is a dialogue

Meditation is a method of prayer which allows us to quiet our thoughts and connect with the Creator. It helps us realize that we are always in the presence of Christ, no matter where we are or what time it is. “Every moment of Jesus’ earthly life, through the grace of prayer, can become immediate to us, thanks to the Holy Spirit, the guide,” Pope Francis shares with us. As we enter this peaceful state, we also enter into dialogue with Christ. In further explanation, “The prayer of the Christian is first of all an encounter with the Other, with a capital “O”: the transcendent encounter with God.”

3. Meditation is a journey

Pope Francis explains, “the methods of meditation are paths to travel in order to arrive at the encounter with Jesus.” Different methods work better for different people. For example, you may best encounter Christ by meditating on sacred art or scripture through Lectio Divina, but others might prefer to pray with music or the Rosary with Our Lady. Thankfully, we don’t make this journey alone — the Holy Spirit is always with us!

When we meditate, we learn more about ourselves and our relationship with Christ. Christian meditation is a method to lead us outside of ourselves, on a journey to Christ through constant dialogue with him.

If meditation is a new part of your prayer routine, get started with Hallow’s Intro Challenge after downloading the app. We guide you through different kinds of Christian meditation, including Lectio Divina and the Examen, to sit in silence with God and grow closer to Him. We hope to pray with you soon!

My story is not all that uncommon. I was raised Catholic, but fell away from my faith. I would’ve probably called myself agnostic or atheist for most of my adult life. When I began my career, I became fascinated with meditation. It was the early days of Headspace, but I began using it regularly along with the other popular meditation app Calm, and though I liked them, always felt like something was missing - like I was being pulled towards something deeper.

I began to ask around and, to my surprise, began to discover the deep, meditative, and contemplative tradition within the Catholic Church - traditions that are hundreds, if not thousands of years old. Techniques like Lectio Divina, the Ignatian Examen, Carmelite Spirituality, Gregorian Chant, and Liturgy of the Hours. Methods through which you meditate on, instead of just the breath, words from Scripture, God’s presence in your life, or spiritual images or scenes.

I sat down one day, googled how to do Lectio Divina, opened up Scripture to a random page, and ended up meditating on the word “Hallow” in the Our Father. It changed my life. It brought me to tears, to the deepest sense of peace and meaning I’d ever experienced, and passionately back to my Catholic faith and to the Church.

This is the idea behind Hallow: to find a way to share the beauty, peace, and power of the Church’s spirituality with the world. We believe that this spirituality has the potential to radically change our lives. To lead us to real peace, purpose, love, and to a real relationship with God. And we believe that if we’re able to combine this beautiful spirituality with the world-class technology & design it deserves, it might not just bring peace to our lives, but to the world.

And what more important time than now? We are in a broken world. One of disease, division, anger, hate, stress, anxiety, death and suffering. After a long year we are tired and weary. We’re searching, now more than ever, for peace and for hope.

We don’t claim to have all of the answers, just that we’ve got a pretty good idea on where to start:

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

In December of 2018, by the grace of God, we launched Hallow: a Catholic prayer and meditation app. The app has over 1,000+ meditations with everything from meditations on the Daily Gospel or Rosary, to Bible Stories by folks like Jonathan Roumie to help calm your mind at night, to beautiful relaxing hymns and chant, to Bible Studies like Fr. Mike Schmitz’s Bible in a Year. You simply open up the app, pick your guide, choose your length (anything from 1 minute to an hour), press play, and close your eyes.

Over the last two years, but especially during COVID, we’ve seen extraordinary growth. Before the pandemic, a little over a year after our launch, we had around 500,000 prayers completed through the app, but over the last year that number has grown to almost 10 million. The pandemic has been such a difficult time for so many, and what we’re seeing is a ton of folks really searching for a sense of peace amidst all of the pain, and we’ve been humbled that the app has been able to help them find it in God:

“This app has been an answer for my weary soul. Tears pour as I try to impress on you how deeply I am impacted by the guidance into simply being with God. This is where my soul is finding peace for the very first time.”

"I hate quoting an old, overused cliche, but I’ve been very lost. And I think for the first time in a while I may be found."

"Hallow has been a miracle in my life and has made returning to the faith so much easier"

We’ve also focused intently on how to build community into the Hallow experience. It’s incredibly important to journey through our faith lives together, so we’ve created things in the app like community prayer challenges that we all journey through each month together, and private Hallow family groups that you can create with your friends, parish, or Bible study to share intentions, reflections, and prayers.

The Hallow community is growing incredibly quickly and everyday we get a ton of requests from our Hallow community members for more beautiful prayer and meditation content, more ways to connect as a community, more partnerships with amazing Catholic creators, and for more language and guide options.

Today, we’re excited to share that we’ve partnered with Katherine Boyle, an incredible, mission-driven investor at General Catalyst, to lead a new round of funding for Hallow of just over $12M. With this new Series A funding, we’re thrilled to be able to invest in more Hallow content, to continue to build out a world-class, mission-driven team (we’re hiring!!), and to invest in reaching out to a broader audience of folks, not just those who go to Mass every week, but to everyone who’s searching for God - especially those who have fallen away from their faith.

Every decision we’ve made, from our public-benefit corp structure to this new round of financing, has been the result of deep prayer and consultation with our spiritual advisors, to ultimately land on whatever choice we thought would most aid our mission of helping the world to grow closer to God.

In building Hallow, our goal is to act as a tool for the Church’s mission. We’ll continue to rely heavily on our key partnerships with the Church, and especially on our growing group of advisors, led by Bishop Kevin Rhoades, to make sure that Hallow always stays 100% authentically Catholic and aligned with the Church.

We believe there are a lot more people out there just like me: searching for a connection to something bigger, for a deeper sense of peace, or for a closer relationship with God. If we can help just one of them to start a conversation with God - to discover His love and His peace - it will have all been worth it.

The first day was a little awkward and hard to sit through, but even with only three days in, I can notice it becoming easier and it is definitely helping me makke time to spend with God and it’s getting me back into a regular prayer routine. Prayer has seemed to be the hardest thing for me to get back into on my journey back to God. It’s good to see technology being used for good. I gave my best friend the rosary I had on me and sent them the Hallow app to download to help lead them. They prayed frequently, especially in these last couple weeks. My best friend told me that she got to pray a rosary with her brother right before he passed away. I’m telling you this because not only has this app been amazing for my own prayer life, but it has had a profound impact on my friend, her brother, and their family.
Ways to feel more connected to God and each other

It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of Lent. While last year’s Holy Week was incredibly difficult for many, this year’s Holy Week brings a profound sense of hope and renewed strength in the death and resurrection of our Lord. We are consoled by His promise to bring forth new life in each of us.

For the past 40 days at Hallow, we have meditated on the virtues of St. Joseph. We have sought to grow in holiness through our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Now, as we transition into the holiest week of the year, we invite you to join us in further contemplation and prayer.

Whether you are staying home or hope to spend time in your parish, here are a few ways to connect with God and each other in special ways this Holy Week.

It has been a gift to pray with you this Lent, and we hope you will continue to journey with us through the joyous liturgical season of Easter!

Palm Sunday

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.”

On Palm Sunday, we meditate on Jesus’s entrance into Jerusalem. Last Palm Sunday, few people had access to palms. This Palm Sunday, if you are able to attend mass, you will receive your palms. If, however, you are not attending in-person masses, some parishes are offering to distribute palms for pickup, or you can make your own.

In the Hallow app, we encourage you to listen to the Daily Gospel Lectio Divina where we’ll pray with the Gospel passage read before mass during the procession of the psalms.

You can also make your own Palm Sunday procession. Load up the car and visit family and friends that you haven’t seen lately. Even while staying socially distanced, a simple wave and smile from the car can make someone’s day.

Holy Thursday

“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”

Holy Thursday is the start of the Triduum, which includes Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

The mass on Thursday is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrating the last meal Jesus had with his disciples and the establishment of the Eucharist. It also commemorates the institution of the priesthood.

There is a lot that happens at this mass: washing feet, the final distribution of the Eucharist until the Easter Vigil, and Adoration.

If you are able to attend in-person mass for Holy Thursday, we definitely encourage you to, but if you are unable, here are some ways you can celebrate this holy day at home.

We recommend downloading the Catholic Family Crate Holy Week at Home Resources where you can find engaging activities for the whole family like washing each other’s feet, praying for priests, and sharing family prayer petitions.

A really engaging idea for families is to host a Last Supper Dinner on Thursday night. Here is one that is very kid-friendly, and here is one that is a bit simpler. Our family did the Lenten tea last Lent and it was incredibly fun to put together and really engaging for our toddler!

In the Hallow App we’ll have several options for prayer during the Triduum, which you can find on the Home tab. On Holy Thursday, you can:

Meditate with “Stay with Me,” a beautiful song by Taize in the #Pray40 Challenge

Make a Holy Hour (a tradition that began with Jesus’ prayer at Gethsemane)

Spend time in Lectio Divina and offer a prayer for Spiritual Communion

Good Friday

“But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed.”

Good Friday, the day our Lord bore the weight of the sins of the world for all time, is a solemn day where traditionally masses are not celebrated and the Eucharist is not distributed.

We are encouraged to fast, pray, and venerate the cross where Christ gave up His last breath to offer us eternal life. Some churches will open for Stations of the Cross or a service, but if you are unable to be present in church, here are a few things we recommend:

Print Stations of the Cross coloring pages and listen to a meditation on the Stations while you color.

Participate in a technology blackout beginning at 12 pm and going until Saturday.

Pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet and venerate your cross at 3 pm, the hour of the Lord’s death.

Join our Stations of the Cross live meditation.

In the Hallow App, you can pray with:

An instrumental version of “O Sacred Head Surrounded” composed by Sean Beeson

A Holy Hour with a meditation on the Stations of the Cross

Lectio Divina on the Good Friday readings

This year, we will begin the Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday leading up to Divine Mercy Sunday. This beautiful novena is being led in the app by Jonathan Roumie.

Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday is a day of waiting and silence, the only day of the entire year in which mass is not celebrated.

While you await the resurrection, engage your family with crafts like painting eggs, making a pascal candle, or baking. The Holy Week at Home guide from Catholic Family Crate has a great recipe for resurrection cookies.

In the Hallow App you can enter into the waiting of this day with:

Music from Harpa Dei

A Holy Hour based on the Psalms

A silent meditation

Easter Vigil

“Your right hand, O LORD, magnificent in power, your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy.”

The Easter Vigil is one of the greatest liturgies of the entire year. The Pascal Candle is lit and passed around the church, signifying Christ, the Light of the World. The Liturgy of the Word has at least 3 Old Testament Readings that cause us to meditate on God’s faithfulness to His people throughout time. Then, new members are brought into the Church through Baptism and we are encouraged to renew our Baptismal promises. Finally, we are called to partake in the Eucharist for the first time since Holy Thursday.

In Hallow, the Easter Vigil meditations are intended to be done after sundown and include the Easter Proclamation and the Litany of the Saints, both of which are prayed during Easter Vigil.

Easter Sunday

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”

The day that we have been anticipating the last 40 days has finally come, Easter Sunday, the day that Christ conquered death with His resurrection. Easter represents the fulfillment of God’s promises to all mankind; it is a day of feasting and rejoicing.

We encourage you to celebrate Easter in whatever way you feel most comfortable. As churches begin to open, you might be able to attend an in-person service for Easter. If not, spend the day doing a fun activity with your family.

Make a special meal, such as a delicious Easter Brunch on Sunday. If you’re not into brunch, many enjoy an Easter dinner of ham or lamb to represent the Paschal Lamb. Tell your children the story of the resurrection and its significance to their lives.

Enjoy the good things that you have forgone in fasting from for the last 40 days. No matter what you do, make it a celebration because freedom from the slavery of sin is something to celebrate!

In the Hallow App, meditate with a Lectio Divina or joyfully pray with music from The Vigil Project.

We pray that your Holy Week is immensely blessed with moments of connection to God and to each other. This week, we hope you remember how much you are loved by your Heavenly Father and share that love with others.

May God bless you and your family this Holy Week!

Be sure to download your Holy Week at Home Success Kit from Catholic Family Crate!

As we approach Lent this year, we realize how challenging the past 12 months have been. Many of us faced physical, economic, and spiritual hardships that we had never faced before.

Along the way, we at Hallow have been working hard to help support our local Catholic communities. We've worked especially hard to support our healthcare workers, active duty military & veterans, and the recently unemployed.

For Lent, we want to take one step further and provide a way for parishes to support the mental and spiritual health of ALL of their parishioners.

I probably sound like a broken record saying “2020 was hard for everyone”, but it was, and we are all looking forward to the start of a new year.

The start of a new year is a great time to set goals, evaluate habits, and take steps towards improving your mind and body. You will see countless ‘best-self’ articles pop up in the next few weeks as it relates to becoming the healthiest, happiest, and the most successful version of you.

But what about the holiest you?

We are called to grow in holiness each and every day, but do we ever actually take the time to figure out how we plan to do that? It’s easy to forget our spiritual goals when putting together our annual vision boards or quarterly life plans, but shouldn’t they actually be our number one goal, every year, every quarter, every month, and every day?

But how do we set goals for deepening our relationship with our creator?

Here are 5 simple steps we can take to evaluate where you are and where you want to go in your walk with the Lord. We encourage you to make prioritizing your relationship with God your top resolution for 2021. You won’t regret it!

Step 1: Take stock of where you are today

To get started, we invite you to take some time to reflect on what’s happened in your life over the past year.

Here is a list of questions that can be helpful in kick-starting your reflection:

What highs did you experience in the last year?

What lows did you experience?

Did you try creating any new spiritual habits?

How often did you pray?

How often did you read the Bible?

What steps did you take to grow in love for God and/or those around you?

When did you embody a spirit of charity to support your church and/or your community?

When were you challenged most by God?

Where are the specific moments over the year you saw God guiding you closer to His will, protecting you, leading you closer to Him?

What do you want to ask God’s forgiveness for?

Who do you want to apologize to?

When did your soul feel most at rest?

What are you most grateful for?

We would encourage you to write your reflections down on a piece of paper or in a journal (writing things down helps you to more deeply reflect and connect with your memories).

Step 2: Decide where you want to go

After reflecting on your spiritual growth over the last year, pray and reflect on where God is calling you to grow with Him this year.

Open your Bible, pray using Lectio Divina, and really listen for what He is telling you. Once you have spent meditating on this, begin to write down what God is asking you to commit to this year.

Here are some ideas that might be relevant:

Committing to a consistent Bible study (either alone or in communion with others). There are so many Bible Study resources available both for free or at very reasonable costs. You can do these alone or as a group of friends (virtually or in person) for fellowship and communal spiritual growth.

Committing to daily prayer time. Don’t have a great daily prayer habit, yet? We at Hallow are here to help. Our January community challenge can guide you in progressing from a simple minute meditation to completing a Holy Hour over the course of the month. Come February, we will have tons of amazing content for Lent. We also have over 700 different meditations and prayers for whatever you are going through in your life. If you are already in a good rhythm, consider challenging yourself to grow deeper in prayer by trying some different prayer methods that aren’t already in your routine.

Commit to weekly/daily mass. Depending on where you live, in-person mass might not be an option, but as things begin to open up (and as you feel ready), begin to make a concerted effort to go back to mass. It has gotten easy to passively enjoy mass in the comfort of our homes, but reignite your love and need for the physical Eucharist. You also could add the goal to regularly attend (or watch a virtual) adoration. There is incredibly healing grace that can come from sitting with the True Presence of Christ on a consistent basis; it really fills your soul.

Commit to serving others. If you are able, volunteer in your community. Send a card to a family member who has been isolated. Consider supporting the church economically. One aspect of your spiritual goal should involve building the virtue of charity. Jesus calls us to give of ourselves to others in whatever way we can. Maybe this is the year to commit to becoming a Catechist or an usher. It could even be as simple as guiding your family closer to Sanctification through doing acts of service as a family. Listen for God to guide you towards how he wants you to better love your church and your neighbor.

Step 3: Create a plan for how to get there

Having aspirations and goals without a realistic plan for bringing them into reality is a recipe for regret and feeling unfulfilled at the end of the year. For progress to happen, you need to have a plan.

Write out exactly what you will do and when. Purchase any resources you need to make it happen (e.g., a Bible Study course, or physical journal) and schedule the time you want to spend each day in prayer or at church. We highly recommend adding blocks to your personal and work eCalendar. Customized Hallow push notification prayer reminders can help make sure that you don’t forget.

Whatever you do, make a plan and stick to that plan every day.

Step 4: Ask someone to hold you accountable

We were not meant to journey alone, God gave us His Church to support us and lift us up.

Telling someone you are going to do something and forcing yourself to check in with them is one of the easiest ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals.

Whether it is a spouse / significant other, family member, Spiritual director, or friend, having a person who knows your spiritual goals and wants to help you accomplish them will help you when life gets crazy and you want to give up or procrastinate

An accountability partner can also help point out resources that might be helpful for you in your walk with God, such as a book or journal technique. Check in with this person at least once a month and make sure that the check-ins are on your schedule.

Step 5: Set regular check-ins with yourself

Finally, as you check in with your accountability partner you also should set regular (ideally weekly) check-ins with yourself. If you messed up for a day or two, that’s okay, just get right back up and recommit yourself to your goals.

God knows we are not perfect. He just wants us to try to have a relationship with Him. We are all fallen, but with small daily steps, we can grow in Holiness, which is all He desires.

We hope this guide will help you in making your relationship with God your number one resolution this year and we encourage you to check out all of the resources we have in Hallow that can help support you on the journey. Know that we are praying for you.
