While last year’s Holy Week was incredibly difficult for many, this year’s Holy Week brings a profound sense of hope and renewed strength in the death and resurrection of our Lord. We are consoled by His promise to bring forth new life in each of us. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">For the past 40 days at Hallow, we have meditated on the virtues of St. Joseph. We have sought to grow in holiness through our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.”</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">On Palm Sunday, we meditate on Jesus’s entrance into Jerusalem. Last Palm Sunday, few people had access to palms. This Palm Sunday, if you are able to attend mass, you will receive your palms. If, however, you are not attending in-person masses, some parishes are offering to distribute palms for pickup, or you can <a href="https://www.catholicicing.com/printable-palms-for-palm-sunday-free/">make your own</a>.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list {"className":""} --> <ul class=""><li>In the Hallow app, we encourage you to listen to the Daily Gospel Lectio Divina where we’ll pray with the Gospel passage read before mass during the procession of the psalms.&nbsp;</li><li>You can also make your own Palm Sunday procession. Load up the car and visit family and friends that you haven’t seen lately. Even while staying socially distanced, a simple wave and smile from the car can make someone’s day.</li></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong>Holy Thursday</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Holy Thursday is the start of the Triduum, which includes Good Friday and Holy Saturday.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">The mass on Thursday is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrating the last meal Jesus had with his disciples and the establishment of the Eucharist. It also commemorates the institution of the priesthood.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">There is a lot that happens at this mass: washing feet, the final distribution of the Eucharist until the Easter Vigil, and Adoration.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">If you are able to attend in-person mass for Holy Thursday, we definitely encourage you to, but if you are unable, here are some ways you can celebrate this holy day at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list {"className":""} --> <ul class=""><li>We recommend downloading the <a href="https://holyweek.catholicfamilycrate.com/">Catholic Family Crate Holy Week at Home Resources</a> where you can find engaging activities for the whole family like washing each other’s feet, praying for priests, and sharing family prayer petitions.&nbsp;</li><li>A really engaging idea for families is to host a Last Supper Dinner on Thursday night. <a href="https://www.showerofrosesblog.com/2012/04/our-4th-annual-lenten-tea-on-holy.html?m=1">Here</a> is one that is very kid-friendly, and <a href="https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/activities/view.cfm?id=1038">here</a> is one that is a bit simpler. Our family did the Lenten tea last Lent and it was incredibly fun to put together and really engaging for our toddler!</li></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list {"className":""} --> <ul class=""><li>In the Hallow App we’ll have several options for prayer during the Triduum, which you can find on the Home tab. Some churches will open for Stations of the Cross or a service, but if you are unable to be present in church, here are a few things we recommend:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list {"className":""} --> <ul class=""><li>Print <a href="https://www.catholicicing.com/printable-stations-of-cross-for/">Stations of the Cross coloring pages</a> and listen to a meditation on the Stations while you color.&nbsp;</li><li>Participate in a technology blackout beginning at 12 pm and going until Saturday.&nbsp;</li><li>Pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet and venerate your cross at 3 pm, the hour of the Lord’s death.&nbsp;</li><li>Join our Stations of the Cross live meditation.&nbsp;</li><li>In the Hallow App, you can pray with:<ul><li>An instrumental version of “O Sacred Head Surrounded” composed by Sean Beeson</li><li>A Holy Hour with a meditation on the Stations of the Cross</li><li>Lectio Divina on the Good Friday readings&nbsp;</li><li>This year, we will begin the <strong>Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday</strong> leading up to Divine Mercy Sunday. The Pascal Candle is lit and passed around the church, signifying Christ, the Light of the World. The Liturgy of the Word has at least 3 Old Testament Readings that cause us to meditate on God’s faithfulness to His people throughout time. Then, new members are brought into the Church through Baptism and we are encouraged to renew our Baptismal promises. Easter represents the fulfillment of God’s promises to all mankind; it is a day of feasting and rejoicing.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We encourage you to celebrate Easter in whatever way you feel most comfortable. As churches begin to open, you might be able to attend an in-person service for Easter. Tell your children the story of the resurrection and its significance to their lives.&nbsp;</li><li>Enjoy the good things that you have forgone in fasting from for the last 40 days. You will see countless ‘best-self’ articles pop up in the next few weeks as it relates to becoming the healthiest, happiest, and the most successful version of you.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">But what about the <em>holiest</em> you?&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We are called to grow in holiness each and every day, but do we ever actually take the time to figure out how we plan to do that? We encourage you to make prioritizing your relationship with God your top resolution for 2021. Once you have spent meditating on this, begin to write down what God is asking you to commit to this year.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Here are some ideas that might be relevant:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list {"className":""} --> <ul class=""><li><strong>Committing to a consistent Bible study </strong>(either alone or in communion with others). There are so many Bible Study resources available both for free or at very reasonable costs. You can do these alone or as a group of friends (virtually or in person) for fellowship and communal spiritual growth.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Committing to daily prayer time.</strong> Don’t have a great daily prayer habit, yet? We at Hallow are here to help. Our January community challenge can guide you in progressing from a simple minute meditation to completing a <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray/-holy-hour/">Holy Hour</a> over the course of the month. Come February, we will have tons of amazing content for Lent. We also have over 700 different meditations and prayers for whatever you are going through in your life. If you are already in a good rhythm, consider challenging yourself to grow deeper in prayer by trying some different <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray/-christian-meditation/">prayer methods</a> that aren’t already in your routine.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Commit to weekly/daily mass. </strong>Depending on where you live, in-person mass might not be an option, but as things begin to open up (and as you feel ready), begin to make a concerted effort to go back to mass. It has gotten easy to passively enjoy mass in the comfort of our homes, but reignite your love and need for the physical Eucharist. You also could add the goal to regularly attend (or watch a virtual) adoration. There is incredibly healing grace that can come from sitting with the True Presence of Christ on a consistent basis; it really fills your soul.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Commit to serving others.</strong> If you are able, volunteer in your community. Send a card to a family member who has been isolated. Consider supporting the church economically. One aspect of your spiritual goal should involve building the virtue of charity. Jesus calls us to give of ourselves to others in whatever way we can. Maybe this is the year to commit to becoming a Catechist or an usher. It could even be as simple as guiding your family closer to Sanctification through doing acts of service as a family. Listen for God to guide you towards how he wants you to better love your church and your neighbor.&nbsp;</li></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="">Step 3: Create a plan for how to get there</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Having aspirations and goals without a realistic plan for bringing them into reality is a recipe for regret and feeling unfulfilled at the end of the year. For progress to happen, you need to have a plan.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Write out exactly what you will do and when. Purchase any resources you need to make it happen (e.g., a Bible Study course, or physical journal) and schedule the time you want to spend each day in prayer or at church. We highly recommend adding blocks to your personal and work eCalendar. Customized Hallow push notification prayer reminders can help make sure that you don’t forget.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Whatever you do, make a plan and stick to that plan every day.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="">Step 4: Ask someone to hold you accountable</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We were not meant to journey alone, God gave us His Church to support us and lift us up.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Telling someone you are going to do something and forcing yourself to check in with them is one of the easiest ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Whether it is a spouse / significant other, family member, Spiritual director, or friend, having a person who knows your spiritual goals and wants to help you accomplish them will help you when life gets crazy and you want to give up or procrastinate</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">&nbsp;An accountability partner can also help point out resources that might be helpful for you in your walk with God, such as a book or journal technique. Check in with this person at least once a month and make sure that the check-ins are on your schedule.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="">Step 5: Set regular check-ins with yourself</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Finally, as you check in with your accountability partner you also should set regular (ideally weekly) check-ins with yourself. If you messed up for a day or two, that’s okay, just get right back up and recommit yourself to your goals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">God knows we are not perfect. He just wants us to try to have a relationship with Him. We are all fallen, but with small daily steps, we can grow in Holiness, which is all He desires.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We hope this guide will help you in making your relationship with God your number one resolution this year and we encourage you to check out all of the resources we have in Hallow that can help support you on the journey. We see David bring peace to Saul whenever he plays the harp (<a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Samuel+16%3A23&amp;version=NABRE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1 Samuel 16:23</a>). Jesus sang traditional Passover hymns&nbsp;with his disciples at the Last Supper (<a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matt+26%3A30&amp;version=NABRE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Matthew 26:30</a>). The Psalms were written with the intention of them being sung. Other times, the tune might carry you to a more peaceful place. Many of us are working from home these days, and music serves as a peaceful start, background, or break throughout the day. It might be “Be Thou My Vision” or “The First Noel” this Christmas. Find somewhere comfortable to sit or peaceful to walk and tune into the music. Notice the rhythm and note the lyrics of the song. As you begin to submerge yourself in the music, see if any of the words speak to you in a particular way. My job at the time required me to wake up at 4 a.m. (not an easy task for a teenager) and spend my entire day working outside mowing lawns, weeding garden beds, trimming bushes, and spreading mulch. It was intense and difficult work, and by the end of the day I was exhausted.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">One blistering summer day, I didn’t finish working until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. When I got back to the shop to put away my equipment, all I could think about was going home and going to bed. But I’d made a habit of visiting our local parish every day after work. The church was just around the corner from our shop, and I’d been helping to transform one of the sacristies into a Perpetual Adoration chapel.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Reluctantly, I decided to go and spend 15 minutes in prayer before heading home. Since the adoration chapel wasn’t yet finished, I sat in a pew toward the front of the main body of the church. I was so tired I had no words for the Lord, so I rested my head on the pew in front of me and listened for His voice.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong>SEE MORE:</strong> <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/fall-asleep-with-7-new-bible-stories/">Bible bedtime stories</a></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">When I awoke sometime later, there was a line of drool dripping from my mouth to the church floor.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Thank God no one else was in the church! Despite the emptiness, I still felt embarrassed at my lack of decorum. And I felt guilty for falling asleep during prayer. I hastily ended my prayer time and headed home.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">It wasn’t until later that year that I discovered the teachings of the saints on falling asleep during prayer. One saint in particular resonated with me.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong>What St. Therese Taught Me</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Later that same summer, a one-woman dramatization of the life of St. Therese of Lisieux came to my parish. I sat across the aisle from the same pew in which I’d fallen asleep just weeks before.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I was enthralled by the play, captivated by the story of this “little” saint who was so real and honest about her struggles and victories in the spiritual life. And as hard as it would be for a 16-year old boy to admit, I was in tears by the end of it — both times I saw it!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">One thing in particular jumped out at me: St. Therese’s insights about falling asleep during prayer.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">The Little Flower openly admitted she struggled to stay awake during the Liturgy of the Hours, her personal prayer time, and her thanksgiving after receiving Holy Communion. But her tendency to doze off didn’t bother her:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:quote {"className":""} --> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"><p>I should be distressed that I drop off to sleep during my prayers and during my thanksgiving after Holy Communion. But I don’t feel at all distressed. I know that children are just as dear to their parents whether they are asleep or awake…. I just think that God “knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.” (Psalm 103:14)</p></blockquote> <!-- /wp:quote --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">When I first heard these words, I thought wryly, “Sometimes children are dearer to their parents when they’re asleep than when they’re awake.” It wasn’t until I became a father myself that I experienced the truth in my observation.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong>Children In the Father’s Arms</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I have a 5-year-old daughter. She’s my little princess and the joy of my life. She has diamond blue eyes, wispy blond curly hair, baby cheeks and a sweet little voice. She’s loving and affectionate. She’s also quite rambunctious and willful. When she’s excited, she gets very loud, which means she’s almost always loud. If she doesn’t want to hear something, she just walks away. She showers me with hugs and kisses one minute, then gets angry and shouts, “Don’t touch me!” the next.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I’ll admit I often breathe a sigh of relief when she finally drifts off to sleep.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Why?</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Because the house gets quiet, for one thing. But when she’s asleep, she’s completely docile and trusting. I can pick her up and put her in bed without her fighting me. In fact, she wraps her arms around me and trustingly allows me to carry her. When I lay her down on her bed, she pulls me close, wraps herself in my arms and snuggles next to my heart, knowing that she’s in a completely safe and loving environment.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">This is the kind of loving and trusting relationship we ought to have with God — even when we’re asleep!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">When Pope Francis visited the U.S. in 2015, he made headlines for dozing off during his first Mass on U.S. soil. Was he mortified for publicly snoozing during this historic Mass?</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Not at all!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Instead, he reminded us that we are all children in the arms of our heavenly Father: “This is one of the many ways in which the name of God becomes sanctified, feeling like a child in His arms,” he said. “I am before God like a child in the arms of his father.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We ought to strive to have such a close and intimate relationship with our Father that we feel perfectly comfortable falling asleep “in His arms” during prayer.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong>Now, none of this is meant to say that it’s okay to fall asleep every time we pray. We must strive to dedicate time in the morning and throughout the day to pray. </strong>But what if the next time we lay down at night with the anxieties of our day swirling in our heads, or wake up in the middle of the night and stare at the ceiling…what if instead of turning to secular sleep apps or sleeping pills, we turn instead to God: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest.’ (Mt. 11:28)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">The folks over at the&nbsp;<a href="https://hallow.onelink.me/Q25Y/c6e84512"><strong>Hallow app</strong>&nbsp;</a>have built an amazing tool that can help us to build a nighttime routine that is both peaceful and spiritual with audio guided Catholic prayers and meditations. Christ's appearances to this saint emphasized his human heart - how he loves as <em>both</em> human and divine. Christ instructed Alacoque to spend an hour every Thursday evening meditating on His <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/religion/commentary-what-gethsemane-teaches-us-about-suffering/2014/04/14/53d4ec84-c412-11e3-9ee7-02c1e10a03f0_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sufferings</a> in the <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+26%3A36-46+&amp;version=NRSV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Garden of Gethsemane</a>. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:quote {"className":""} --> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"><!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --><cite>Matthew 26:36</cite></blockquote> <!-- /wp:quote --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">In the Gospel of Matthew, we learn that Jesus and his disciples went to Gethsemane after the Last Supper. He shared his suffering and grief with them, knowing of His crucifixion the next day. So, Jesus went to pray, but He asked His disciples to stay awake with Him. When he returned, however, He found the disciples asleep. "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?" (Mt 26:40). </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">When we make a Holy Hour, we remain and stay awake with Jesus. It’s a powerful and beautiful way to grow closer to Him. Holy Hours are commonly done in <a href="https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/eucharistic-devotion" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adoration</a> of the Blessed Sacrament, but you could make a Holy Hour at any time: in a church, your home, or even outside in nature.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:image {"id":25192,"sizeSlug":"large","linkDestination":"custom","className":""} --> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://hallow.app.link/HolyHour"><img src="https://hallow.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Holy-Hour-1920x960-v3-1-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-25192"/></a></figure> <!-- /wp:image --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-make-a-holy-hour-in-prayer">Why make a Holy Hour in prayer?</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">To put it simply, we make a Holy Hour to be present with God. When Christ was in agony in Gethsemane, he turned to prayer. In our own agony, suffering, or even gratitude, we can also turn to prayer as Christ did. In his book, <em>Treasure in Clay</em>, the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen writes, </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:quote {"className":""} --> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"><!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I keep up the Holy Hour to grow more into his likeness ... We become like that which we gaze upon. Looking into a sunset, the face takes on a golden glow. Looking at the Eucharistic Lord for an hour transforms the heart in a mysterious way as the face of Moses was transformed after his companionship with God on the mountain. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --><cite>Venerable Fulton J. Sheen</cite></blockquote> <!-- /wp:quote --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">In this passage, Sheen refers to God's appearance to Moses at the <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus%203&amp;version=NRSV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">burning bush</a>. He reminds us that prayer is like talking with God face-to-face, just like God did with Moses on Mount Sinai. The same goes for our time in a Holy Hour. Even if we aren't in <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/eucharist-holy-communion-adoration-prayer/">Eucharistic Adoration</a>, we hope that the <a href="https://hallow.com/2022/09/14/prayer-to-the-holy-spirit-and-other-holy-spirit-prayers/">Holy Spirit</a> will lead us to meet God face-to-face during this time in prayer. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-do-we-make-a-holy-hour">When do we make a Holy Hour?</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">You can make a Holy Hour anytime, anywhere. While traditionally Holy Hours have been made in Adoration, you don't need to be in the presence of the Eucharist to pray for a full hour. The most important part of making a Holy Hour is preparing yourself to spend the <em>full</em> hour with God. What can you take away from this time spent with Him?
