Father’s Day is a beautiful day on which we celebrate our fathers, grandfathers, and the father figures in our lives. Though not officially a Christian celebration, Father’s Day is annually celebrated on the third Sunday in June and offers a time for reflection, expression of gratitude, and prayer for our fathers.

Who wrote the Psalms?

The Book of Psalms was written by a variety of authors, known and unknown, and composed and compiled over many centuries. In total, there are 150 psalms in this incredible work of Scripture, often referred to as “The Psalter.”

Almost half of the Psalms are attributed to David, the anointed King of Israel whose line Jesus descended from – 73 of the total 150. Some Dead Sea Scroll scholars believe David composed 3,600 psalms as noted in the ancient text, though these writings are lost or perhaps undiscovered perhaps. Evidently, they’re not included in the modern Bible.

The USCCB reports that “there is no sure way of dating any Psalm,” but all were written before 165 B.C., well over a century before the birth of Christ. Some of the Psalms were written before the exile of the Jews to Babylon in 597 B.C. (“pre-exilic”), while others were written after the Babylonian captivity, which ended in 538 B.C. (“post-exilic).

Psalm 90 – “Lord, you have been our refuge through all generations” – is attributed to Moses, who lived around 1400 B.C. This attribution of the famous psalm has led historians to believe it is the oldest.

We also know that Asaph, Korah, Solomon, Ethan, and Heman were psalmists in addition to David and Moses.

The Types of Psalms

While the Book of Psalms encompasses the infinitude of emotions which we hold in our hearts, theologians have identified many “types” among the 150 psalms in the Bible. Among the many types, scholars also often distinguish between communal and individual psalms as well.

“... the whole complexity of human life is distilled in the complexity of the different literary forms of the various Psalms: hymns, laments, individual entreaties and collective supplications, hymns of thanksgiving, penitential psalms, sapiential psalms and the other genres that are to be found in these poetic compositions.”
Pope Benedict XVI

Why pray with the Psalms?

The Book of Psalms is arguably the most read and prayed book of the Bible. Beyond this, here are three reasons why we pray with the Psalms:

To pray with the same words that Jesus did.

It’s so powerful to know that Jesus prayed with the Psalms. One of His last words before dying on the cross comes from Psalm 22.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Psalm 22:2

The Psalms teach us how to pray.

And they have for centuries. Taking on the psalmist's words, we pray alongside many other Christians seeking to know and love God better. As we read in the Catechism of the Catholic Church,

God tirelessly calls each person to this mysterious encounter with Himself. Prayer unfolds throughout the whole history of salvation as a reciprocal call between God and man.”

CCC 2591

Find solace in the shared human experience.

Encompassing the wide range of human emotions, the Psalms help us to pray through the difficulties and the joys of life as so many others have before us and will do after us. While we do not all experience the same hills and valleys of life, it can be so comforting to know that our hearts hold the same longings as others.

In the Psalms are expressed and interwoven with joy and suffering, the longing for God and the perception of our own unworthiness, happiness and the feeling of abandonment, trust in God and sorrowful loneliness, fullness of life and fear of death. The whole reality of the believer converges in these prayers. [...] Since the Psalms are prayers they are expressions of the heart and of faith with which everyone can identify and in which that experience of special closeness to God — to which every human being is called — is communicated.

When to pray with the Psalms?

Because of the Psalms’ inherent thematic variety, you really can pray with them at any time. Many pray with the Psalms at the beginning of the day or right before bed. We also pray with the psalms during Mass with the Responsorial Psalm, read or sung between the first and second readings.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was inspired by Jesus' apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690). Christ appeared to the French nun of the Order of the Visitation of Our Lady four times, revealing His Sacred Heart to her through mystical visions.

The Solemnity of Pentecost recognizes the sometimes overlooked third member of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit.

Celebrating the Holy Spirit’s role in launching the Church, Pentecost takes place on the seventh Sunday (50th day) after Easter.

It follows the Ascension, where Jesus ascended into heaven and was no longer physically present with his disciples.

Before he left the disciples, Jesus told them, “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age,” (Matthew 28:20).

Through the Holy Spirit’s descent as a mighty wind, sparking tongues of fire above them, the disciples recognized Jesus was indeed with them, baptizing them with the Holy Spirit and strengthening their mission.

Pentecost in the Bible - Acts of the Apostles

We learn of Pentecost in the Christian tradition in Acts of the Apostles.

In the first chapter of Acts, Jesus alludes to sending the Holy Spirit onto his disciples:

While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5)

Jesus went on to tell them in the “Great Commission,” in his final words before ascending to heaven, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

The next chapter of Acts contains the fulfillment of Jesus’s words. As the disciples were gathered in the upper room with others (a group of about 120 total), the Holy Spirit descended on them.

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” (Acts 2:2-4)

Those gathered saw this as their baptism “with the Holy Spirit,” as Jesus had promised and recognized this as their commissioning to be Jesus’s witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” This is why Pentecost is known as the birth of the Church.

Pentecost in the Old Testament

The Christian celebration of Pentecost has roots in Jewish customs, as it is related to the Jewish feast of Shavuot.

Shavuot, also known as Feast of the Weeks (and sometimes referred to in other ways) celebrates Moses receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. It’s celebrated 50 days (seven weeks) after Passover, hence the name “Feast of the Weeks.”

It also celebrates the harvest, as we learn in Exodus:

“You shall keep the feast of Weeks with the first fruits of the wheat harvest, likewise, the feast of the Ingathering at the close of the year.” (Exodus 34:22)

When we hear “Pentecost” these days, we think of events we learn about in the Acts of the Apostles. When Acts of the Apostles mentions Jesus’s followers being gathered for Pentecost, it means they were together in Jerusalem for the “Jewish” Pentecost.

Pentecost Bible Readings and Scripture

Pentecost liturgies usually spotlight similar portions of Scripture each year.

The account of the Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles normally represents the first reading. The Gospel often comes from John and features passages in which Jesus addresses the disciples about the Holy Spirit.

The USCCB contains full daily readings for Pentecost and each day.

Prayers for Pentecost

Pentecost is an important time for prayer and for listening to how God calls and commissions us, as he did the disciples.

In his 2021 Pentecost homily, Pope Francis implored people to “open your hearts to the Holy Spirit.”

Holy Spirit prayers are popular during Pentecost, and can be as simple as repeating “Come, Holy Spirit” quietly in your head whenever time allows during the day.

Also, consider the following short prayers:

“Heavenly Father, on this Pentecost day, let me feel the Holy Spirit wash over me, guiding me in Your ways and helping me to hear Your call.”

“May the Holy Spirit strengthen me, protect me, encourage me and guide me today and all days.”

“God, quiet my heart and head so I can be mindful of the gift of the Holy Spirit in my life. In the voices of others, may I discern Your voice. In the actions of others, may I recognize Your love. In moments of stress, may I feel the peace that Your spirit brings. Amen.”

Project Overview

In a world where students are leaving the church at younger and younger ages, Catholic school educators, administrators, staff, and parents are faced with a fundamental challenge: how to sow the seeds of faith in a way that produces “good fruit” (Matthew 13:8).

At Hallow, we believe that the necessary foundation for catechesis, in order to nurture a lifelong journey of discipleship, is a personal relationship with Christ. It’s not enough to learn about God; we also need to know Him. The path to sainthood must involve both our heads and our hearts.

We believe that a theological education ought to be, first and foremost, a process of falling in love with God. Much like in dating, we don’t sit down and try to memorize a long list of facts about our beloved. Instead, we meet them, we ask questions, we listen, we laugh, and we share about ourselves; we get to know them as a person. Our knowledge of them grows as our love deepens.

Providing students with opportunities to deepen their love of God is paramount to everything else we do in our Catholic schools. The truth about God's creation, the nature of the sacraments, the beauty of scripture: all of these things are best understood within the context of a loving relationship with our Creator.

The Catechism affirms this approach in Part IV, The Life of Christian Prayer, “Christians owe it to themselves to develop the desire to meditate regularly, lest they come to resemble the three first kinds of soil in the parable of the sower…Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ.” (CCC 2707-2708)

That is the vision we are building at Hallow, and, as an educator, we would love your help in building “head and heart” experiences for students across the country (and world).

Yours in Christ,

Contest Timeline

This summer contest will have two phases.

Phase 1: Applicants will create an outline of their proposed content along with samples to demonstrate the style of what they envision producing. The Hallow for Schools team will evaluate these proposals and invite the winning creators to produce the full scope of the proposed content.

Key Date: All proposals are due on or before June 9, 2023, at 5 p.m. CT.

Phase 2: The winners of Phase I will work over the summer to produce their content, with support and direction, as needed, from the Hallow for Schools team. Individual completion dates may vary, but all materials must be submitted for final review by July 15, 2023.

Submission Materials and Instructions

Proposals should be scoped at the level of a “Unit” consisting of multiple lesson plans. The range of media and types of supporting materials can vary, but must include some audio-content that lives (or would live) in the Hallow app.

Proposals should include (1) a comprehensive outline of the content you envision creating and (2) one actual sample of each content type you are proposing.

For example, if you are proposing a Unit consisting of 4 lesson plans featuring new audio reflections for the Hallow app, in-class group activities, and homework assignments, you would submit:

A bulleted outline of the entire Unit including a breakdown of each lesson plan, as well as outlines of each supporting audio reflection, in-class group activity, and homework assignment.

Each Unit/lesson plan must have an associated curricular learning standard. The specific learning standard may come from your diocese, your religion/theology curriculum, or the national USCCB standards.

Each Unit/lesson Plan should also have a learning objective (ie. “Students will be able to…). This should be related to the associated curricular learning standard, but can be articulated however you prefer.

Submissions of proposals can be made using THIS FORM and should be in whatever file format (e.g., pdf, excel) that you feel best captures your vision for the content.
For many, Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate important women in our lives and the blessing from God that they represent.

While not technically a Catholic or Christian holiday at its core, Mother’s Day is still an important day of prayer and reflection for many, recognizing not only the gift of Mary to the Church, but the gift of mothers and motherlike figures in our lives. Mother’s Day also falls during the Month of Mary, which the Church has recognized for centuries, turning to Our Lady as a guide to better know and love her Son, Jesus.

To assist those seeking to make their observance of Mother’s Day particularly prayerful, Hallow has assembled a number of Mother’s Day prayers and prayer resources.

Hallow also recognizes that Mother’s Day can be a challenging time for many. Our prayers are with those struggling with fertility issues, those who have recently lost their mothers, those who might not have the best relationship with their family or any others for whom it’s a difficult or traumatic day.

Heavenly Father, I lift up to you today my mother and all mothers. Bless them with strength to continue to care for their children, with the same bold, selflessness Mary showed Jesus. Help my mother and all mothers feel our gratitude and truly know their impact. May we honor them today and on all days as vessels of Your love. In Your name I pray. Amen.

God, today, we celebrate mothers, but the truth is, we ought to celebrate them every day. Their love manifests in small, subtle ways each day–in the mundane that sometimes we can take for granted. We thank you for their sacrificial love and ask you to uplift them today. Thank you for the gift they are in our lives. In Your name we pray. Amen.

When our mothers are tired, Lord, give them strength. When they feel alone, give them comfort. When they feel overwhelmed with the challenges of parenting, help them to know peace. In their darkest moments, be their Light. At times in our lives, our mothers are everything to us, meeting our every need. We ask You to provide them today with whatever gift they need. In gratitude, we pray. Amen.

Mary, full of grace, I ask for your intercession today for my earthly mother. Pray for her, and pray that her example of love draws me closer to Your son, not only on Mother’s Day but on all days. Amen.

Mother’s Day is a great time to consider drawing closer to Mary and spending time in prayer asking for her intercession.

The Hail Mary is an easy way to invite Mary into your Mother’s Day celebration, and you can also consider praying the Rosary.

Perhaps you also consider learning more about the Marian Consecration, a lifelong commitment to Mary that takes place over 33 days.

Also, learn more about the Mary, Undoer of Knots Novena, which is inspired by Mary interceding at the wedding at Cana, asking for Jesus’s help. She can help us untangle the knots in our life the way she helped the wedding hosts emerge from their difficult situation.

As students prepared for finals, projects, exams, and a highly anticipated summer, they took a break to showcase their incredible artistic talent for the first-ever Hallow Student Art Competition.

Art is one of the most unique and beautiful expressions of the Christian faith. For thousands of years, art has made tangible the personal and meaningful relationship with one’s faith. The allure of art, in part, comes from its universality among age groups, cultures, and centuries.

Inviting students of all ages from across the world to participate in the creation of artwork for the Hallow App, exemplifies the universality of even the artwork that appears on a phone or computer screen.

Students were asked to create a piece of religious artwork that would be considered for a month-long feature in the ‘Kids’ section of the Hallow App.

In just a few short weeks, students of all ages and grade levels submitted their artwork for consideration. Watercolor, pencil, crayon, and even some digital pieces were submitted with the hope that these pieces would be chosen as the winning artwork. The Hallow design team had the pleasure of reviewing the artwork and was incredibly impressed with the talent of the young students.

The winning artwork was produced by students who created pieces of art that not only showcased their talent but also incorporated beautiful and relevant images from our faith and remained cohesive with other art on Hallow. We are proud to announce the winners and honorable mentions from the 2023 Hallow Student Easter Art Competition!

Saints hold a special place in the body of the Catholic Church and are especially prominent in its prayer life.

The USCCB describes saints as people in heaven “who lived heroically virtuous lives, offered their life for others, or were martyred for the faith, and who are worthy of imitation.”

Reflecting on the connection between prayer and the communion of saints, Pope Francis said, “When we pray, we never do so alone: even if we do not think about it, we are immersed in a majestic river of invocations that precedes us and proceeds after us.”

Sometimes, people, churches, and organizations share a special connection to a saint. This refers to the concept of patronage, and a certain saint being known as “the patron saint of” a particular group.

What Are Patron Saints?

Patron saints are members of the communion of saints who certain groups look to for special intercession.

History and tradition often dictate patron saints, but individuals and groups also can choose a patron saint.

This commonly occurs during Confirmation, when those being confirmed (the “confirmandi”) choose a saint’s name as part of the process for this important sacrament.

Organizations often choose saints that align with their mission or those they feel a special connection to.

For example, Catholic University’s Institute for Transformation of Catholic Education (ITCE) chose patron saints connected to education.

It explains that it seeks “patronage and prayers of the great educator saints who have gone before us. ITCE looks in a special way to six patron saints who exemplify our guiding principles”:

Hallow’s patron saint is St. Teresa of Avila.

Patron Saints of Countries

The early 20th-century work “The Catholic Encyclopedia” explains that the term “patron” may be applied to a church, a district, a country, or a corporation.

While church patrons are usually self-evident in their name, countries also have patron saints (sometimes more than one!) that might be less widely known–perhaps because they can shift over time.

Smaller regions can have specific patron saints as well. St. Junipero Serra is the patron saint of the state of California. At the same time, St. Vibiana is considered the patron saint of Los Angeles and St. Francis of Assisi the patron saint of San Francisco.

List of Patron Saints and their Causes/Devotions

Groups of people united in specific causes also identify with patron saints, though they are usually not officially recognized by the Church in the same way that the Church recognizes the patronage of a country or church building.

Still, these saints are important to these groups and often play a crucial role in the faith life of their members.

There can be patrons for even more specific causes and devotions. For example, while St. Raphael is considered the patron saint of healing, one might ask for the intercession of St. Bernardine of Siena, patron saint of respiratory illnesses, if dealing with a condition specific to the lungs.

Similarly, while St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of students, someone struggling to promptly complete homework assignments might look to St. Expeditus, patron saint of procrastinators.

Catholics never pray to saints. Rather, saints are venerated and Catholics ask for their intercession. Catholics ask saints to pray to God. Their example of boldly living their faith can inspire us and lead us closer to God.

All Saints Day recognizes all the holy men and women saints in heaven.

Who are the patron saints? There are many! Many saints are patrons of different places or groups. St. Mary and St. Joseph are among the most popular patron saints.

How many patron saints are there? Adding up patron saints of continents, countries, states and cities, the list would easily approach one thousand different patron saints. Throw in patron saints of organizations and causes, and there are even more.

What is the list of all patron saints? Because many patron saints of different causes are not official titles, there’s no official, comprehensive list of all saints and their patronages.

How are patron saints chosen? Patron saints are "assigned by a venerable tradition, or chosen by election as a special intercessor with God.”

The last few months have been an absolute whirlwind. God has us on a crazier ride than I ever could’ve imagined. This Lent, Hallow was the first faith-based app to ever crack the top 10 apps in the App Store overall coming in at #3 - beating Netflix, Spotify, Instagram, Amazon, Tiktok, YouTube and so many more of the largest apps in the world. It took us almost two years from launching Hallow to get to 1 million prayers prayed in total on the app. This Lent we had over a million prayers prayed each day. We just crossed 225 million prayers prayed in total and, as of last week, now over 10 million downloads.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. All credit belongs to Him and to the incredible team of folks we have working so hard here at Hallow.

We’ve also been humbled and blessed to be able to close an additional $50 million Series C fundraise bringing the total funding raised for Hallow to $105 million. The round was led by Goodwater Capital, the largest consumer tech-only venture fund in the world that also happens to be founded by two incredible men of faith and explicitly rooted in the mission of Micah 6:8: “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” The name Goodwater comes from the combination of Good News and Living Water, reflecting their mission to empower entrepreneurs to change the world for good.

Every decision we’ve made in building Hallow has resulted from deep prayer and conversation with our faith advisors, and this new round is no different (read more about our structure as a Public Benefit Corporation here).

This round and these milestones are exciting. We’re thrilled to partner together with mission-driven partners, team members (we’re hiring! Join our team here) and creators to invest even more heavily in building an experience that helps the world to build a daily habit of prayer. But with each of these milestones, something has become more and more clear over time.

This is not why we do this. The numbers are not what we’re working for. It’s not the vision for Hallow.

The vision for Hallow is not numbers, but individuals - not millions of downloads, but each one of us as children of God. The vision for Hallow is Sarah.

Sarah is a young married mom of three little girls. She became tragically addicted to alcohol and stimulants and was involved in a longstanding affair. She’d never really taken her faith very seriously. Her husband found out about the affair and left. She was alone, ashamed, and depressed - thinking often she’d be better off dead. She saw a post about the app and something moved her. She figured she might as well give it a try. She realized, she told us, that in her darkest hour - when everyone she knew had left, everything she cared about had been destroyed - that the only person there with her in the darkness was Christ. She began praying with the app over a dozen times a day. And in her words, He picked her broken pieces up off the floor and put her together again. She cut off the affair. She got sober for the first time in years. She prayed for her husband’s miraculous forgiveness and, in his own experience in adoration, he forgave her. Their family has been reunited.

She told us, “I know you probably get these stories all the time, but I just wanted to let you know, that if you never do anything else in your life, please know that you saved me. I don’t think I’d be standing here alive today if it were not for this app and the grace that God gave me through it.”

This is why we do this. This is what we’re working for. This is the vision for Hallow.

If we spend the next 30 years and are able to be a part of just one more person like Sarah’s journey back to God, if we help God reach out to just one more of His lost ones…then it will have all been infinitely worth it.

And I don’t think Sarah is alone. I think there are millions and millions of Sarah’s. Honestly, I think we’re all a bit like Sarah in our own way. We’re all a little lost. We’re all a little stuck. We’re all a little bit further from God than He invites us to be.

But our faith is one of hope. And if there’s anything that this experience has taught me, it’s that there is no valley that God cannot reach. There is no darkness that the Light cannot overcome.

I cannot wait to see what He does next.

AMDG,

The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker is May 1. A relatively new feast in the liturgical calendar, it was introduced in 1955 by Pope Pius XII. This special day and novena commemorate St. Joseph as someone who most gracefully integrated spiritual life with his daily, laborious life as a father, husband, and worker.

The patron saint of the Church and guardian of the Holy Family, Joseph is a beautiful example for us to follow God's purpose despite what the world might say or what little recognition we might get for doing so.

Pray this novena to St. Joseph the Worker for nine days, culminating on May 1 (Feast of St. Joseph the Worker) or March 19 (Solemnity of Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin). We can pray this novena to ask for Joseph’s special care over a particular intention such as help in an area of our lives needing discernment.

How to Pray the St. Joseph the Worker Novena
Ask for St. Joseph's care over a special intention.
