Early Life
Born in Belgium in 1840, St. Damien of Moloka’i’s father planned for him to take over the family business. However, Damien followed his older brother and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
His brother was assigned to serve a mission in the present-day state of Hawaii but suddenly fell sick, so Damien volunteered to take his place.
Legacy
At the time, those who were infected with leprosy were deported by the government to live on a distant peninsula, isolated from the rest of the island by a high mountain cliff.
Father Damien drew near and became a source of consolation and inspiration for those who had been cast out from society. He helped them by centering his work in Christ.
Fr. Damien contracted leprosy himself in 1885, and he was then able to identify completely with those whom he served. After 16 years of sacrificial love, he died in 1889.
He is remembered as “Apostle of the Eucharist,” something to which he credited his ability to minister to lepers.
“Without the constant presence of our Divine Master, I would never be able to cast my lot with that of the lepers,” he said.

Dear Saint Damien of Molokai, you have shown great compassion to all those in need. Help us to have the same compassion for others. Help us to love without boundaries so we may see Jesus in all whom we meet just as you did with the people of Molokai Hawaii. In Jesus name I pray who is both human and Divine. Amen.

Saint Damien, you ministered to those in despair and isolation. I call upon you to open my heart and mind, to care for the poor, the sick, the weary, and those forgotten. Bestow upon me the inner strength of faith, and unconditional compassion to be a disciple of Christ. As a Spartan, I come before you a humble servant of God, bless me with the spirit of your love and instill in me the touch of healing and grace that you yourself possessed.
