How to Pray the Sacred Heart Novena

NOTE: On Friday, June 16, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Hallow is launching a 12-Day Prayer Challenge, led by Trevor Williams, in response to the USCCB’s invitation to prayer. The challenge will feature the Sacred Heart Novena as well as the Litany of the Sacred Heart and more.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was inspired by Jesus’ apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690). Christ appeared to the French nun of the Order of the Visitation of Our Lady four times, revealing His Sacred Heart to her through mystical visions.

St. Padre Pio prayed the Sacred Heart novena prayer every day.

Do not let the past disturb you – just leave everything in the Sacred Heart and begin again with joy.

The Sacred Heart Novena is most traditionally prayed during the nine days leading up to the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is always 19 days after Pentecost on a Friday. In 2023, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls on June 16.

In 2023, the Sacred Heart Novena begins June 7 and ends June 15.

While this novena leads up to the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it also prepares our hearts for the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary the day after, on June 17

Do you not know that not only is Jesus resting and dwelling continually in the Heart of Mary but that He is Himself the Heart of Mary.

How to Pray the Sacred Heart Novena

Time needed: 7 minutes

  1. Begin by making the Sign of the Cross.

In the name of Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

  2. Pray the first Sacred Heart petition.

O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.”

  3. Pray the Our Father.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  4. Pray the Hail Mary.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

  5. Pray the Glory Be.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

  6. Pray the second Sacred Heart petition.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.”

Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of my request.

  7. Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

See prayers above in Steps 3-5.

  8. Pray the third Sacred Heart petition.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.”

  9. Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

See prayers above in Steps 3-5.

  10. Pray with the novena prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender Mother and ours.

  11. Pray the “Hail, Holy Queen” (Salve Regina).

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
    To you do we cry,
    poor banished children of Eve.
To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears
    Turn then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us,
    and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

  12. Conclude with the Sign of the Cross.

In the name of Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

  13. Repeat the above daily for 8 days.
