The Hail Mary is a Scripture-based prayer in which we meditate on words from the Gospel of Luke. In the second half of the prayer, we ask Mary to intercede for us and bring us closer to her Son, Jesus.

It's also the heart of the Rosary, in which we pray with Mary while contemplating the sacred mysteries, or significant moments, of Jesus' life, death, and Resurrection.

The Hail Mary is traditionally prayed by Catholics, but many people (both Christian and non-Christian) feel drawn to Mary. They recognize her powerful witness as a faithful disciple of Christ and seek her aid as a compassionate spiritual mother.

Along with the Lord's Prayer (Our Father), the Hail Mary is one of the first prayers that Catholics learn in their journeys of faith.

Origin

The Hail Mary is rooted in Scripture — the initial lines are taken directly from the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke. We read that God sends the Angel Gabriel to proclaim to the Virgin Mary that she is to bear the Son of God. Upon coming to her, the Angel greets Mary, saying, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28). We address Mary in the same way at the beginning of our prayer.

Mary gives her full consent to God's plan of salvation, and the Angel departs from her. Then she sets out in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who, in her old age, is six months pregnant with a son; "for nothing will be impossible for God" (Luke 1:37).

As soon as Mary enters the house and greets Elizabeth, the infant leaps in her womb.

And Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
Luke 1:41b-43

Initially adapted from Scripture in Latin, we recognize the many verses from Luke that form the Hail Mary in English today.

Why do Catholics pray the Hail Mary?

To trust God as Mary did

Each time we pray the Hail Mary, we recognize the holiness of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her unhesitating, unwavering acceptance of God’s will for her life. Theologians call Mary’s beautiful "Yes" to God at the Annunciation her “fiat” — Latin for “let it be done.” At every moment, Mary placed her complete trust in God’s plan for the world. When we pray, we remember her humble “yes” and seek to have the same disposition before God in our relationships with Him.

To ask Mary for her guidance and prayers

St. Padre Pio said, “Abandon yourself in the hands of Mary. She will take care of you.” When we pray the Hail Mary, we abandon ourselves to Mary, who is not only Jesus' mother but ours as well. Before his death on the cross, Jesus entrusted all of his disciples to Mary and her spiritual maternity (John 19:26-27). So we trust that, as our greatest intercessor in Heaven, she is praying for us without ceasing.

To know Christ more fully

One thing is clear: although the repeated Hail Mary is addressed directly to Mary, it is to Jesus that the act of love is ultimately directed, with her and through her.

Pope St. John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae Apostolic Letter (2002)

God chose Mary as the singular vessel for His Son to come down to earth and save the world. In our faith, we do not worship Mary; she remains a creature, beloved by God. But we do honor her because she is the "disciple par excellence" - the perfect follower of Jesus. Everything she is and does points to him. So through her, who knew him best, we come to know Christ more fully.

When do we pray the Hail Mary?

The Hail Mary can be prayed as an individual prayer at any time.

It is also commonly prayed in a series of ten within the Rosary; to say ten Hail Mary’s is to say a “decade” of the Rosary. This repetition is not a recitation of empty phrases, but rather, a form of meditation–being drawn deeper into the mystery of Jesus, using words from Scripture.

(Of course, the Hail Mary has also been known to be uttered during the final seconds of American football games, too!)

On October 3, 1789, President George Washington received a message from Congress requesting him “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.”

His proclamation declared that the day “be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

Thanksgiving has roots in recognizing the many blessings God has given us, as individuals and collectively as a country. More than 230 years later, millions of Americans continue to celebrate Thanksgiving with an eye toward God as the original source of all for which we have to be grateful.

Although the history of this uniquely American holiday is steeped in appreciation for the divine, it’s not always easy to carve out time for prayer during a day that can be jam-packed with distractions ranging from cooking timers to cheerful parades.

Hallow is here to help, with a wide range of prayer options to fit your Thanksgiving plans and keep God at the center of your celebration.

Sometimes the best prayers are ones that are passed down directly from Scripture.

This passage from the 12th chapter of the Book of Isaiah is particularly relevant for Thanksgiving.

On that day, you will say:
I give you thanks, O Lord;
though you have been angry with me,
your anger has abated, and you have consoled me.
God indeed is my salvation;
I am confident and unafraid.
For the Lord is my strength and my might,
and he has been my salvation.
With joy you will draw water
from the fountains of salvation,
And you will say on that day:
give thanks to the Lord, acclaim his name;
Among the nations make known his deeds,
proclaim how exalted is his name.
Sing praise to the Lord for he has done glorious things;
let this be known throughout all the earth.
Shout with exultation, City of Zion,
for great in your midst
is the Holy One of Israel!

Isaiah 12:1-6 NABRE

Colossian 3:16 provides another way to tie Scripture into your Thanksgiving celebration:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Prayers for Thanksgiving Morning

Holidays can be stressful, whether hosting or traveling, celebrating with large groups or spending the day alone.

There’s no better way to begin any day than with a short prayer of thanksgiving to God, and that’s especially true on the fourth Thursday in November.

Let Hallow help you start your Thanksgiving with meaningful time with the Lord.

With Hallow, you can join thousands of others in prayer conveniently from your phone, spending time giving thanks to God before the football games kick-off or the gravy is poured.

Download the Hallow app, and before the festivities begin, start your morning with a simple daily prayer such as the rosary or a minute meditation like Jesus I Trust In You.

Pausing amid the busyness.

Giving thanks before the meal.

A traditional Catholic Thanksgiving prayer can help remind us of the origins of the day and bring us closer to God by acknowledging His blessings.

It can also bring us peace.

And during a day that can sometimes see kitchen chaos, challenging dynamics, and enough vegetable chopping to make a line cook proud, small moments of inner peace are invaluable.

Consider this prayer of thanksgiving at your table this year if you’re looking for a traditional Catholic or Christian blessing:

Good and gracious God, we give You thanks today, as we do all days, first and foremost for the gift of creation and the gift of life. We ask You to bless this food, that it may nourish us and sustain us, and strengthen our ability to do Your will. We pray in thanksgiving for all the hands involved in bringing it to our table. You tell us, Lord, that to whom much is given, much is expected. May this meal and the fellowship we enjoy not only serve as clear reminders of Your love of us, but of Your call for us to share Your love and to serve our brothers and sisters, especially those most in need. We ask this as we ask all things, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Simple Thanksgiving Dinner Prayers

Perhaps you’re interested in more of a simple Thanksgiving table blessing. Many families begin a meal by “saying grace,” and Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be an exception.

Although most Thanksgiving dinners are unlike any other meal, the prayer before it doesn’t have to be a “special” prayer.

Indulging in grandma’s legendary stuffing and mom’s special sweet potato dish might make it feel like the prayer needs to be consummate to the extraordinary meal.

But take solace in knowing that the quality of prayer has nothing to do with its length. Simple prayers can convey just as much gratitude as longer ones.

See some examples of simple Thanksgiving blessing prayers below:

Heavenly Father, we gather together today with hearts filled with gratitude. This meal we share reminds us of the endless blessings You’ve bestowed upon us. We pray in thanksgiving not only for this food we share, but in all the ways You’ve shown us Your love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Dear God, we thank You for this meal and for all the hands that helped prepare it. We give You thanks most of all for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. Please bless the food we eat, all who are gathered today to share it, and all our loved ones who can’t be with us today. We ask this as we ask all things, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Even a common dinner prayer is a great option:

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving Prayers Remembering Those Who’ve Died

The holidays can be difficult for those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. We often have many happy memories from celebrating past holidays with those who are no longer with us.

With November being the month of remembrance, the Thanksgiving blessing can be a perfect time to ask for God’s prayers for family members and friends whom we’ve lost in the past year.

Consider the following prayer to remember those who have passed away:

Heavenly Father, we come to You today with grateful hearts, recognizing the many gifts You’ve given us that have allowed for this special meal to come together. Still, we acknowledge our sadness that our gathering today feels incomplete. We lift up to You our dearly departed, [Say names of lost loved ones] and ask You to bless them as you bless us. We’re comforted by the promise of Your Kingdom and look forward to one day sharing together in a heavenly feast with all those who are not with us today. In Your name, we pray. Amen.

The Hallow app also offers a litany for the dead that can help you remember deceased loved ones of all generations.

Thanksgiving Prayers In Mixed Company

It can be easiest to lead the table blessing before the meal and offer a distinctly Catholic prayer when you’re the host and when entertaining a smaller group of guests.

In larger settings, with mixed company, or if you’re at someone else’s home, it can be more challenging to join together a large group for a traditional Catholic blessing.

If you’re not hosting the meal, you may still volunteer to lead a prayer (or you might get asked!). A more general prayer that both non-believers and devout rosary aficionados might find agreeable is the way to go.

Give thought to using a short prayer that celebrates the beauty of diversity within God’s creation, like the following:

Divine Creator, maker of the universe and all the beauty that lives within it, we give thanks for this meal and for all the good in our lives. We think of our many brothers and sisters who go without, each and every day. May this feast compel us to work to better care for all of those in the world who need our love and generosity the most. Amen.

Thanksgiving Prayers for Children

With full houses and big celebrations, it’s not uncommon for families to have a “kids table” at Thanksgiving, where grandchildren, younger cousins, and other family members will enjoy the meal.

This is a great opportunity to introduce children to the importance of prayer.

And a great chance to let them lead it!

Here’s a short prayer you can print out for younger Thanksgiving guests, to cultivate the habit of giving thanks to God before all meals and celebrations:

Thank you, God, for this past year, Thank you, God, for family here, Thank you, God, for this delicious food, Thank you, God, for all that’s good! Amen.

Our Gratitude Praylist includes a Lectio Divina on giving thanks always and another on the 10 lepers.

You’ll still have Thanksgiving leftovers in your fridge when Advent begins, so spending some time in prayer amid all the turkey is a great spiritual tune-up to the important liturgical season preparing for Christmas.

Hallow is your go-to resource for your Advent prayers and Christmas prayers, providing you with an easy way to draw closer to God during a time when the outside world can make that most challenging.

This year, Hallow’s Advent #Pray25 Challenge features the cast of The Chosen. Pray every day leading up to Christmas, reflecting on on salvation history and how you can listen to God’s call today. Jonathan Roumie, the actor who portrays Jesus in The Chosen, will guide us through scripture with other cast members from The Chosen.

The tradition of gift-giving

Advent is a season of waiting, preparation, and prayer for the coming of Jesus on December 25. It is also a season of giving and receiving gifts among our loved ones. This gift-giving tradition goes back to the Nativity, a few days after Christ was born. The three wise men followed the bright Star of Bethlehem to meet the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Known as King Balthasar (from Arabia), King Melchior (from Persia), and King Gaspar (from India), they brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and recognized Him as the Son of God.

Nowadays, we give gifts to our loved ones during Christmas in imitation of the three wise men. It's a beautiful opportunity to be thoughtful and gracious to recognize Christ in your neighbors, family members, friends, or even a stranger.

We are so excited to journey with you this Advent for Hallow's third #Pray25 Challenge. The #Pray25 Challenge is an awesome way to ignite your prayer life and bring you into community with thousands around the world to pray and meditate on the birth of Jesus.

This year, we will be seeing Advent through the eyes of Mary. As the mother of Jesus, she has a special place in the story of his birth at Christmas.

During the first three weeks of Advent:

We'll explore the themes of Hope, Faith, and Joy, leaning on Scripture to help us grow in these areas.

We’ll consider how Mary is an example for us, and ask for her help to open our hearts to Jesus.

We will also pray with alongside incredible Saints, and reflect using multiple types of prayers and methods, like Litanies, Imaginative Prayer, Lectio Divina, and Examens.

We will also release exclusive Advent & Christmas music and Christmas Bible Stories, including two new kids Bible Stories!

Then, for the final 7 days of Advent, Mary will lead us, as she always does, to her Son. We’ll reflect on who Christ is through his titles in the traditional "O Antiphons" as we bid him to come into our lives and into our world.

We are also incredibly excited to share that this year, for every person who joins the #Pray25 Challenge by December 3, 2021, Hallow will give $1 to Mary's Meals USA. Every dollar will provide 10 meals to a child in Liberia, a country on the West African coast.

What is Advent?

Most people have heard of an Advent Calendar, and you probably have one, maybe even filled with chocolate!

If you are new to Hallow, however, or Catholicism, Christianity, or religion in general, you might not know exactly what Advent is, or why we celebrate it.

According to the USCCB:

"The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and to the anniversary of Our Lord’s birth on Christmas. From the earliest days of the Church, people have been fascinated by Jesus’ promise to come back. But the scripture readings during Advent tell us not to waste our time with predictions. Advent is not about speculation. Our Advent readings call us to be alert and ready, not weighted down and distracted by the cares of this world (Lk 21:34-36)."

In summary, Advent is a time not for passively awaiting Christ to come, but for active preparation through fasting, reading Scripture, and prayer.

Advent allows us to focus our minds and hearts on the true reason for the season - Christ, coming to redeem all of humanity.

When is Advent?

Advent in 2021 starts on November 28th.

The first Sunday of Advent, which focuses on prophecy and preparation for the coming of Christ, is the start of the new year for the Catholic Church.

The season lasts for four weeks, and Advent culminates on December 24th. Then, it is followed by the Octave, or an eight day celebration, of Christmas!

How to celebrate Advent? What's an Advent Calendar or Advent Wreath?

The Advent Calendar, which is seen all around the world come Christmas time, is a special calendar used to count down the days to Jesus's birth on Christmas.

These calendars became popular in the 19th century and nowadays can take on different forms such as standard paper calendars, wooden calendars with little cubby holes for small treats, puzzles and games, or social media & infographic calendars. With all of these variations, you check off or open each day as it goes by, reflecting with a prayer or meditation on the coming of Jesus.

Another staple and tradition in many Catholic homes is the Advent Wreath, where a new candle is lit each Sunday to represent the themes of hope, faith, joy, and peace.

Your family might have other Advent traditions like bringing out the nativity set, listening to Advent music, and giving to charity. Advent is also celebrated in incredibly unique ways around the world, for example with the celebration of St. Nicholas Day, the St. Andrew Novena, or Las Posadas.

At Hallow, we celebrate Advent with daily prayer and meditation counting down to Christmas with one of our largest and most anticipated community challenges: #Pray25.

Why we Meditate with Mary

Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Jesus, and who better to help us develop a deeper understanding and connection to him than his own mother.

Mary carried Jesus inside her womb for 9 months, and in the Hail Mary we say, "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." Mary was blessed beyond measure; she was born the Immaculate Conception; and her fiat (yes) to the Angel Gabriel brought the Savior of the World to us.

Mary experienced deeply and knows intimately the themes we will dive into as part of this prayer challenge.

Hope through the eyes of Mary

Mary was Jewish, and at the time under Roman rule, many Jewish people were hopeful that a Messiah would come to free them from oppression. Mary knew the scriptures and the prophecies of a coming Savior and clung fast to that hope. Her "yes" to bring Christ to the world stemmed from this unwavering hope in the promises of God that fill the Old Testament. Mary's knowledge of God's Word and memory of God's works gave her the courage to place her trust in Him above all else.

Throughout the New Testament, we see glimpses of Mary’s hope continuing to give her strength ... as when she is told by the prophet Simeon that a sword would pierce her heart, when she stands at the foot of the cross, when she sees her son killed, when she holds his body in her arms.

Her continued presence during Jesus’ childhood, ministry, and crucifixion is a model for all of us, encouraging us to hold fast to hope in God, no matter what is happening around us. For, as we see in Sacred Scripture, by Mary's perseverance in hope, she was witness to Jesus' Resurrection.

Faith through the eyes of Mary

Mary's faith comes to life in Luke Chapter 1, verse 38:

"Mary said, 'Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.'"

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this about Mary's faith:

"The Virgin Mary most perfectly embodies the obedience of faith. By faith Mary welcomes the tidings and promise brought by the angel Gabriel, believing that "with God nothing will be impossible" and so giving her assent: 'Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word.' Elizabeth greeted her: 'Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.' It is for this faith that all generations have called Mary blessed. Throughout her life and until her last ordeal when Jesus her son died on the cross, Mary's faith never wavered. She never ceased to believe in the fulfillment of God's word. And so the Church venerates in Mary the purest realization of faith."

Joy through the eyes of Mary

After a long and dangerous journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus would have brought immeasurable joy to Mary's life.

St. Gregory said: "Christ is born, glorify Him! Christ from heaven, go out to meet Him! Christ on earth, be exalted! Sing to the Lord all the whole earth; and that I may join both in one word, let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, for Him who is of heaven and then of earth. Christ in the flesh, rejoice with trembling and with joy; with trembling because of your sins, with joy because of your hope."

Mary's hope and faith ultimately led to her joy, born in the manger. But Mary also shows us that a life lived joyfully in love of God is not a life devoid of suffering. Just think of some of the moments of deep pain in Mary's life: watching her son grow apart from her, remaining at the cross, burying him. But this is why joy does not stand on its own. When we have hope, faith, and love - we can find joy even amidst suffering. If we remain in God's love, as Mary did, Jesus promises us a joy greater than anything the world can offer.

There has been tremendous suffering the past two years, but Mary demonstrates what it is like to have hope, faith, and joy in the midst of suffering. She is not only the Mother of God, but she is our mother, given to us at the foot of the cross. Through Mary, we can truly understand what the story of Christmas really means.

What are the O' Antiphons and why are we praying with them?

In the final week of the #Pray25 Challenge, we will be praying and meditating on the "O Antiphons." In these prayers, we declare different titles of Christ and bid him to come into our world and into our hearts.

The Church has been praying the "O Antiphons" since at least the eighth century. These are the antiphons from the Magnificat Canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17th through the 23rd. The O Antiphons use biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament. They proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of these Old Testament hopes but of present ones as well. Their repeated use of "Come!" expresses our longing for the Messiah.

The most well-known antiphon is probably "O Come O Come Emmanuel." Emmanuel. God with us. The sacred name revealed by Isaiah of the Messiah to come was fulfilled in Jesus. God with us in the flesh, fully human and fully divine, and God who continues to be with us always, in our hearts, through His Spirit, and in the Eucharist at every Mass.

Advent is an incredibly powerful time for prayer and reflection, joy, peace, hope, faith, and love. It is the profession of God's love for us, in sending His Son: the Savior of the world as a pure and innocent baby at Christmas.

Advent 2021 – #Pray25 Journey with Mary to Christmas
Journey for 25 Days leading up to Christmas with Mary this Advent.

We’re thrilled to share a ton of great news for the Hallow mission! We just passed 1.5 million downloads, 25 million prayers completed, 35,000 five star reviews, raised additional funding from some phenomenal new partners, added some world-class folks to our advisory board, and are hiring for a bunch of great new roles!

It is incredibly humbling to think of how far God has taken our mission of prayer in such a short time (for those who haven’t heard the Hallow story, it’s here). Getting to journey alongside the Hallow community on the path to finding peace in God is the great privilege of our lives. And the stories that fellow community members have shared remind us each day of the amazing work that God is doing through this mission:

“Hallow, through God, has changed my life! I was on the brink of depression then I discovered meditation and your app and… I’m a different person. It’s such a beautiful feeling to feel happy, whole, abundant...free from chains of addiction, anger, resentment, sadness… I can’t even describe it!”

Praise God. The last two and a half years have been an unbelievable ride. But the exciting news is that we’re just getting started: we’re growing as fast as we ever have with 700% more prayers started on the app this month than during the same time last year.

And that means we have a lot more work to do. We believe that the idea behind Hallow - re-introducing the world to the beauty, peace, and centuries-old traditions of the Church’s spirituality - has the opportunity to change the world.

More than ever, our world is tired. We’re exhausted by the pandemic, tired of politics, depressed by the suffering and pain in the world, stressed with juggling child care and work, made anxious by our addictions, large and small. We are looking for rest, for peace, for a light amidst all of this darkness.

The good news is that we believe there is a place to find this light: in silence.

“In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you… Souls of prayer are souls of great silence”
Mother Teresa

And it is in that silence and prayer, that God is reaching out to each of us - to those of us who are already praying each day but feel like we’re just going through the motions, to those of us who have fallen away from our faith, to those of us who might be interested in spirituality, but have never tried to pray, to those of us struggling with stress and anxiety or wading through grief and loss, God is there. He’s knocking on the door of our hearts - inviting us into a real and life-changing relationship with Him, inviting us into His peace.

Mike’s Bible in a Year, Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermons, peaceful music & Gregorian Chant, Mental Health content from Sister Miriam & Dr. Bob Schuchts, an Audio Bible by Jonathan Roumie from The Chosen, Novenas by Dr. Scott Hahn & Leah Darrow, community challenges & prayer groups, and Bible Stories for Sleep from Bobby & Jackie Angel, Chris Stefanick, Jason Evert, Emily Wilson, Fr. Mark-Mary, Matt Fradd, David Henrie, Dr. Sri, Fr. Josh Johnson, Lizzie Velasquez, Laura Fanucci, and so many more. But we still have so much to do.

Every day, we get an enormous number of requests from Hallow community members for more beautiful prayer and meditation content, more ways to connect as a community, more partnerships with amazing mission-driven creators, and especially for more languages and guide options.

Today, we’re excited to share that we’ve partnered with some amazing investors (Drive Capital, Peter Thiel, Susa Ventures, Teamworthy Ventures, Uncork Capital, Narya VC, Contrary Capital, General Catalyst, Jim Perry, and Scott Malpass - the only American appointed by Pope Francis to sit on the board of the Vatican Bank) in a new $40 million round of funding for Hallow. This Series B funding follows our $12 million Series A earlier this year led by General Catalyst, bringing the total raised this year to $52 million.

With this new funding, we’re thrilled to be able to invest more quickly in building out a world-class app, adding more Hallow content, and in making more of the content available for free. We continue to build out a world-class, mission-driven team (we’re hiring!!), and to invest in reaching out to a broader audience of folks, not just those who go to Mass every week, but to anyone who’s searching for God - especially those who may have fallen away from their faith.

Every decision we’ve made, from our structure as a public-benefit corporation to our pricing model to this new round of funding, has been the result of deep prayer and consultation with our spiritual advisors to further our mission of helping the world to grow closer to God.

In the spirit of this prayerful discernment and guidance, we’re thrilled to also be able to share our new advisory board led by Bishop Kevin Rhoades and made up of amazing folks like Fr. Kevin Grove & Dr. John Cavadini from the University of Notre Dame, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Steve Gunrow from Word on Fire, Scott Malpass, Dean Abela from the Catholic University of America, Laura Fanucci, Lisa Hendey, and Sr. Jaime Mitchell.

In building Hallow, our first goal is to act as a tool for the Church’s mission. We’ll continue to rely heavily on this board to make sure that Hallow always stays 100% authentically Catholic and aligned with the Church.

We believe there are a lot more people out there searching for a connection to something bigger, for a deeper sense of peace, or for a closer relationship with God. If we can help just one of them to start a conversation with God - to discover His love and His peace - it will have all been worth it.

Pray the Rosary in the ancient language of Latin with Fr. Matthew Schuster, associate pastor at St. John Cantius (Chicago, IL), on Hallow.

What is the Latin Rosary?

Tradition holds that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1221 and revealed the Rosary to him in the Church's universal language: Latin. After Mary's apparition, St. Dominic shared this devotion with others to meditate on the mysteries of Christ's life. Many also believe that the historical origin of the Rosary lies in the monastic practice of reciting 150 Psalms each week. Today, many believers pray the Rosary in their native tongues, but you can also pray it in its original language.

For centuries, millions of faithful people have asked the Blessed Mother to intercede in their lives by praying the Rosary. When we pray the Rosary in Latin, we remind ourselves of this universality of the devotion.

What is the 54 Day Novena?

This novena originated in the late 19th century and is attributed to a girl in Naples, Italy who had been suffering from an illness that was thought to be incurable. After asking Mary for help, the Blessed Mother taught her this prayer and she was miraculously healed. To this day, Catholics around the world continue to pray this novena to seek help from our Mother. For more insight into what the 54 Day Novena is and how to pray it, visit hallow.com/54-day-novena.

We know this is a long novena, and praying a Rosary every day is a big commitment. St. Thérèse of Lisieux (on whose feast day we begin this novena!) often struggled with the Rosary. But, she said: “I think that the Queen of heaven, since she is my mother, must see my good will and she is satisfied with it.”

We hope you’ll join us. And together, we’ll pray as best we can, in the hope that through our prayers, we’ll grow closer to Jesus through Mary.

The 54 Day Rosary Novena begins Friday, October 1st.

What is the challenge?

When this novena first came up last year, we heard countless stories of folks who had tried to complete it in the past, only to fall off after a week, or even a month into the challenge. Upon completing the challenge, one thing we heard consistently was that praying everyday with a group brought the additional accountability needed to pray the entire novena (which, for many of our users, was their first successful completion of any challenge this long). Because of this, we wanted to encourage as many of you as possible to journey through this challenge with a group.

The challenge is simple: any group that's created in the app (either through your parish, friends, family, or anything) that gets all of their group members to complete the 54 Day Novena will be entered for a chance to win a $10,000 donation to the parish or non-profit of their choice.

While the goal would be to have as many people as possible complete each session on the day it is released, we understand that life can be unpredictable and we will not be strict in ensuring sessions are completed within the exact 24-hour period that a session is released. Nor will it count multiple times if one person completes each session two or three times. At the end of the day, any group with two or more members that has every member in its group complete all 54 Rosaries by November 15th will be entered into a chance to win a single $10,000 donation. The "leader" of the group (i.e., the user that created the group) will be the one to determine where the $10,000 is donated. The recipient of the donation can be any Catholic parish in the world, or a registered nonprofit that is aligned with Catholic values.

How do I join the challenge?

To participate in this challenge:

Create a group in the app using the community (3 circles) icon in the top right of the Home tab

Invite friends & family to your group (at least one other person so the group is two or more including yourself)

Encourage everyone in your group to pray every day of the 54 Day Novena

Any group that has every group member complete every day of the 54 Day challenge will be entered for a chance to win a $10,000 donation

If you already have a group in the app no need to create a new group, just encourage every member in your group to complete the 54 Day Novena!

How do I edit group settings?

You can invite new members by either sharing your code or link by using the big black plus button at the bottom of the Group Details screen. If your group gets too large (more than ~10 members), you can turn off alerts by flipping the Mute Alerts setting in Group Details to on (set at off in screenshot below).

What if I'm a free user?

You can still participate! Just join or create a group following the same steps above and have everyone in the group complete one of the free Rosaries on the app each day of the 54 Day Novena challenge. This will enter you into the chance to win in the same way that completing every day of the Novena will.

How do I share?

The best way to share is to invite your friends or family via email or text, to speak with your local priest about sharing with your local parish at mass or over email, or to share with your other faith communities (e.g., Facebook groups, bible studies).

Be sure to share the 6 digit code to join your group. Seen above on the last screen after creating a group. To look up your code, you can go into your group, click the Details screen as shown above, click the black plus button in the bottom right, and then see your code in your link. It will be the last 6 digits.

Childhood

St. Thérèse was born in 1873 in France to Zelie and Louis Martin. The youngest of five siblings, St. Thérèse was stubborn but devout from a very young age. She was quite bright but often became bored at school because of it. Around age 9, Thérèse became ill with no working treatment; she prayed for a cure to her illness. Turning to a statue of the Virgin Mary smiling down on her, Therese was healed. She wrote, “Mary's face radiated kindness and love.”

Her inclination towards religious life grew even more fervent after this healing, though she was still so young. She hungered to grow closer to Christ. By age 13, two of her old sisters had already entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux, and St. Therese longed to be there with them. She begged the local bishop, and even Pope Leo XIII, during a pilgrimage to Italy. He told her, “Go, go, you will enter if God wills it.”

She entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux in 1888 — at age 15. She grew in peace, humility, and love. In 1896, she fell ill with tuberculosis. She wrote the Story of a Soul during the months preceding her death. She passed away in 1897, praising God up until her last moment on earth.

The rich spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux is known today as the “Little Way.” The modern Saint so easily resonates with many of us for the pure ordinariness of her life, though she lived it in an extraordinary way. Her "Little Way" towards Christ was made up of small steps to find holiness in everyday life. She devoted her life to spiritual simplicity — she focused on loving God.

Canonization

St. Thérèse was canonized in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. At the time, she was the youngest Saint ever to be canonized — she passed away at the young age of 24. Her parents Zelie and Louis Martin were canonized, too. In 2015, Pope Francis canonized them as the first and only married couple to be made Saints together.

A doctor of the Church

Before this, however, St. Pope John Paul II honored St. Therese for her spiritual contribution to the Church. In 1997, he declared St. Therese a doctor of the universal Church. With this title, the Church deems the saint's work true and beneficial.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux did not only grasp and describe the profound truth of Love as the centre and heart of the Church, but in her short life she lived it intensely. It is precisely this convergence of doctrine and concrete experience, of truth and life, of teaching and practice, which shines with particular brightness in this Saint, and which makes her an attractive model especially for young people and for those who are seeking true meaning for their life.

St. Pope John Paull II recognized that, though St. Therese died young, she understood the “divine Love that surrounds and penetrates every human venture.” Her unfaltering trust in God continues to inspire us in our daily lives today.

Today, there are 36 recognized doctors of the Church whom St. Thérèse sits among in Heaven. However, only four of them are female doctors of the Church — St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Ávila (Hallow's patron saint), and St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

Transitioning from work, late-night tasks, or even socializing to rest is often no easy feat at night. In fact, falling asleep can sometimes be the most frustrating part of the day ... We've all had those nights when we need rest the most, but our brains won't stop thinking about tomorrow's to-do list. Other times, we feel anxious about something going in our lives.

As you return to rest each night, consider this transition a time to hear God's word or rest in His company. It might take some practice to turn from your to-do list to Scripture or a Saint's prayer, but we hope these prayers for sleep will guide you towards peace in His presence as your last moments of the day are spent with God.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God leads his people to rest. He gives them peace, comfort and takes on their burdens. And He does the same for you each day and night. Rest with God's Word with these Bible verses for sleep.

God gave Father Dolindo Ruotolo, who was St. Padre Pio's spiritual director, this short prayer which we repeat nine times as a novena. As we say this prayer for sleep, we seek the virtue of humility — to trust that Jesus will take care of everything. Pray this novena on Hallow with Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in The Chosen.

We can all identify areas where we need healing in our lives. Whether we suffer from physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental pain, sometimes finding the words to talk with God about our struggles is difficult.

We know prayer doesn't always heal your sickness, relieve your struggle, or mend what is broken immediately. However, keeping a Bible verse at the top of your mind and heart (or even as your phone screensaver) might relieve some of your daily struggles. We hope these verses remind you to rely on the Lord for strength in our times of pain, sickness, and healing from wounds of all kinds.

We are so excited to announce our newest Hallow partner, Dr. Scott Hahn, who prays the Rosary and the Litany of Loreto on the app.

About Dr. Scott Hahn

Dr. Hahn serves as the Fr. Michael Scanlan Professor of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He is also the founder and president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. Additionally, Hahn has authored many books on Sacred Scripture, Catholic tradition, marriage and family life, and more.

Educational background

Hahn attended undergrad at Grove City College, where he studied Theology, Philosophy, and Economics. He continued his theology studies at Gordon-Conwell Seminary, earning his Master's of Divinity. He then began as an associate pastor at a Presbyterian church in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1982. Just four years later, Hahn and his wife, Kimberly, entered the Catholic Church. Dr. Hahn then received his Ph.D. in Biblical Theology at Marquette University in 1995. Today, Dr. Hahn is a celebrated Scripture scholar, author, speaker, and president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology.

Rome Sweet Home

Throughout his life, Dr. Hahn has written over 50 books and developed multiple Ignatian Study Bibles. One of his most popular books, Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism, is co-authored with Kimberly and details their conversion to Catholicism. Dr. Hahn largely credits his conversion to a renewed understanding of the covenant, what he calls “kinship with God.”

Hallow and Dr. Scott Hahn

Dr. Hahn has studied and worked to help people read the Bible “from the heart of the church” for many years. We hope our partnership with Dr. Hahn helps all listeners find truth, deepen their study of God’s Word, and love Jesus more through this discovery of the beautiful gift of the Bible. Dr. Hahn’s impactful and insightful reflections on Scripture are an inspiration to the team at Hallow, and we hope you enjoy praying with him on the app.

“If we do not fill our mind with prayer, it will fill itself with anxieties, worries, temptations, resentments, and unwelcome memories. Hallow is a great resource to help you pray more.”
Dr. Scott Hahn

Dr. Hahn's Hallow Content

Dr. Hahn will lead us through the Rosary (Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, and Glorious mysteries), the St. Jude Novena, and various readings from Romans.

St. Jude Novena

The St. Jude Novena leads us in prayer for hope and strength in times of struggle, pain, and challenge. St. Jude is often called the patron saint of “the impossible.” We are so excited that Dr. Hahn will lead us through this novena, which is prayed for hopeless causes and during desperate situations.

Bible Story: Letter to the Romans

Dr. Hahn's reading of St. Paul's Letter to the Romans is a testament to his personal conversion to Catholicism. Dr. Hahn also authored the commentary on Romans for the Catholic Commentary on the Sacred Scripture series. In this letter, St. Paul writes of his conversion to the faith, the grace God bestowed upon him (and us), and how to love Christ every day.

“First, I give thanks to my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is heralded throughout the world.” (Romans 1:8)

Dr. Hahn’s Bible Story includes various chapters throughout the epistle. In Dr. Hahn’s reading from Romans, we are reminded that Christ died for our sins so that “we might live in newness of life” (Romans 6:4) to love God and our neighbors. Dr. Hahn's Bible Story includes the following verses: 1:1-15; 6-8; 14-15:13.
