Dolindo Ruotolo (1882-1970), a Servant of God and candidate for beatification (to become a saint). Jesus revealed to Fr. Dolindo the words that make up this <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray-novenas/">novena</a>. Fr. Dolindo, who called himself “Mary’s little old man,” suffered for much of his life, even living in paralysis for the last ten years before his death. He was also, at one time, the spiritual director and a friend of <a href="https://hallow.com/2022/09/15/padre-pio-prayers-feast-day/">Padre Pio</a>, who similarly found the love of Christ in his suffering.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":"lent-embed"} --> <p class="lent-embed">Both Fr. Dolindo and Padre Pio left us with many words and prayers that guide us toward surrendering ourselves to Christ. Close your eyes and say to me with faith: “Thy will be done, You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that I will intervene as does a doctor and I will accomplish miracles when they are needed. Do you see that the sick person is getting worse? Do not be upset, but close your eyes and say, “You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that there is no medicine more powerful than my loving intervention. By my love, I promise this to you.</em><br/><br/><strong>Day 5</strong><br/><em>And then I must lead you on a path different from the one you see, I will prepare you; I will carry you in my arms; I will let you find yourself, like children who have fallen asleep in their mother’s arms, on the other bank of the river. What troubles you and hurts you immensely are your reason, your thoughts and worry, and your desire at all costs to deal with what afflicts you. </em><br/><br/><strong>Day 6 </strong><br/><em>You are sleepless; you want to judge everything, direct everything and see to everything and you surrender to human strength, or worse – to men themselves, trusting in their intervention – this is what hinders my words and my views. Oh, how much I wish from you this surrender, to help you; and how I suffer when I see you so agitated! Satan tries to do exactly this: to agitate you and to remove you from my protection and to throw you into the jaws of human initiative. So, trust only in me, rest in me, surrender to me in everything. </em><br/><br/><strong>Day 7 </strong><br/><em>I perform miracles in proportion to your full surrender to me and to your not thinking of yourselves. I sow treasure troves of graces when you are in deepest poverty. No person of reason, no thinker, has ever performed miracles, not even among the saints. He does divine works whosoever surrenders to God. So don’t think about it any more, because your mind is acute and for you it is very hard to see evil and to trust in me and to not think of yourself. Do this for all your needs, do this, all of you, and you will see great continual silent miracles. I will take care of things, I promise this to you.</em><br/><br/><strong>Day 8 </strong><br/><em>Close your eyes and let yourself be carried away on the flowing current of my grace; close your eyes and do not think of the present, turning your thoughts away from the future just as you would from temptation. Repose in me, believing in my goodness, and I promise you by my love that if you say, “You take care of it,” I will take care of it all; I will console you, liberate you and guide you. </em><br/><br/><strong>Day 9</strong><br/><em>Pray always in readiness to surrender, and you will receive from it great peace and great rewards, even when I confer on you the grace of immolation, of repentance, and of love. Then what does suffering matter? It seems impossible to you? Close your eyes and say with all your soul, “Jesus, you take care of it.” Do not be afraid, I will take care of things and you will bless my name by humbling yourself. A thousand prayers cannot equal one single act of surrender, remember this well. Diaries from Francesco’s spiritual director note that Francesco began to experience ecstasies and apparitions as early as age 4 or 5. Francesco, however, didn’t realize that these were extraordinary experiences; he kept many of them to himself, thinking they were ordinary. Through more and more visions and encounters with the <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/prayers-for-healing/">healing</a> work of God, Francesco’s trust in Him only continued to grow, though his early life was certainly not without struggle.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Ultimately, Francesco became a <a href="https://www.capuchin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Capuchin Friar</a> in January 1903 at the age of 16. At this beginning point of his religious life, Francesco Forgione became Brother Pio of Pietrelcina.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><strong><em>[This is a very brief overview of Pio’s childhood and vocation. His stomach refused food, and he was only able to drink minimal amounts of water. He left the monastery and moved back home at the recommendation of his doctors, but his health was still poor. With little hope of improvement of his health, Pio most desired to be ordained. Though he was quite young for ordination, the bishop ordained Pio on August 10, 1910. At 23, Brother Pio became Father Pio, or in Italian, Padre Pio, as we know him today.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Drafted during World War I, Pio <a href="https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/saint-pio-of-pietrelcina">discovered</a> he had tuberculosis. Discharged from serving, Pio eventually moved to a different Capuchin Monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo in 1917, where he grew his ministry and lived until his death on September 23, 1968.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="padre-pio-stigmata">Stigmata&nbsp;</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">In 1918, Europe was ravaged by World War I and the Spanish flu. It was a year of suffering for Pio, his community, and Europe. Amidst this suffering of the world, one day in September, Padre Pio said Mass at San Giovanni Rotondo. Afterward, he received a miraculous vision: he saw someone with Christ’s crucifixion wounds. After the vision, Pio realized he was physically dripping with blood – he had received the stigmata. Stigmata are the five wounds of Christ replicated in the human body. Around 400 people, including St. Francis of Assisi and <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/st-catherine-of-siena-feast-prayers-quotes-feast-day/">St. Catherine of Siena</a>, have claimed to have received the stigmata.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Upon receiving the stigmata, Pio tried to keep it a secret, though word spread about his reception of Christ’s wounds. Pio even founded a hospital near San Giovanni Rotondo called “Casa Sollieve della Sofferenza,” or the “Home for the Relief of Suffering” in 1956. The hospital still operates today and houses up to 1,000 patients. It is common to think mainly of God the Father and God the Son and neglect the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spirit is equally as instrumental and present in our lives as the other two persons of the Trinity. In the Nicene Creed, we state that the Holy Spirit is the giver of life:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">“<em>I believe in </em><strong><em>the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life</em></strong><em>, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.”</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="book-of-isaiah">Book of Isaiah - 7 Gifts of the Spirit&nbsp;</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We read of the Holy Spirit throughout the Old Testament, but the Book of Isaiah is especially critical in understanding why we pray to the Holy Spirit. Not only does the Book of Isaiah prophesy the coming of Christ (the branch of Jesse), but it also shares with us the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and a branch shall grow out of his roots.</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the spirit of wisdom and understanding,</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the spirit of counsel and might,</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. </em>(Isaiah 11:1-3)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">God bestows these seven gifts – <strong>wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord</strong> – on us during the Sacrament of Baptism. In the Catholic tradition, we believe these seven gifts are strengthened through the Sacrament of Confirmation.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We can, of course, pray to the Holy Spirit and ask for the grace that these gifts might be strengthened in us. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>Pray the <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/holy-spirit-novena-pentecost-novena/">Novena to the Holy Spirit</a></em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="holy-spirit-new-testament">The Holy Spirit in the New Testament</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="3-special-occasions">Three special occasions</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">There are countless references to the Holy Spirit throughout the New Testament. From Paul’s letters to the <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray-the-gospels/">Gospels</a>, we read of the Holy Spirit working through the life of Christ and His disciples.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Three <em>special</em> occasions of the Holy Spirit come to mind from the New Testament and the life of Christ that remind us of the Holy Spirit’s power and peace as the Third Person of the Trinity:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4,"className":""} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">The virgin birth of Jesus</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">“Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4,"className":""} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Jesus’s baptism</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">After John the Baptist baptized Jesus, Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would descend upon them and began His ministry on earth. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”</em> (Acts 2:1-4)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">These moments in the life of Christ have formed the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and our celebration of Pentecost each Sunday after Easter.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">These Scriptural accounts of the Holy Spirit, among others, also lead us to understand why the Holy Spirit is so often represented as a dove or as tongues of fire – the peaceful yet strong Third Person of the Trinity.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="fruits-of-the-spirit">Paul’s letter to the Galatians - fruits of the Spirit</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">In addition to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, Paul’s letter to the Galatians shares the fruits of the Spirit.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>“By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.”</em> (Galatians 5:22-26)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">These “fruits” are virtues we are endowed with as children of God. So, I started praying to the Holy Spirit to wrap me in His goodness and peace as I shut my eyes. It has since become a close to daily occurrence in my life.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I’ve started speaking with the Holy Spirit throughout my day, not just at night when I’m trying to fall asleep. Sometimes I whisper the simple and popular invocation <strong><em>“Come, Holy Spirit”</em></strong> at the beginning of my day when pouring a <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/prayer-as-a-morning-cup-of-coffee/">cup of coffee</a> or going for a jog. Other times I call on the Holy Spirit to be present with me as I think through a problem or an upcoming meeting or conversation with a friend.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">I turn to the Holy Spirit when I’m <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/prayers-for-anxiety/">anxious</a>, when I struggle to see the good in a situation, when I feel lost. To know the Holy Spirit is present where I stand, moving through me and transforming my imperfect heart – this knowledge is both beautiful and comforting.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"align":"center","className":""} --> <p class="has-text-align-center"><a href="https://hallow.app.link/LKguCAxP9sb"><em>Pray the “Come, Holy Spirit” prayer on the Hallow app.&nbsp;</em></a></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"className":""} --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="why-pray-holy-spirit">Why pray to the Holy Spirit?</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="interior-master">The Holy Spirit as Interior Master</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">In his homily on Pentecost Sunday in 2014, Pope Francis <a href="https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=10572" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">described</a> the Holy Spirit as the Interior Master. He said,&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>“The Holy Spirit teaches us: he is the </em><strong><em>Interior Master</em></strong><em>. He guides us along the right path, through life’s challenges. He teaches us the path, the way. In the early times of the Church, Christianity was called “the way” (cf. Acts 9:2), and Jesus himself is the Way. The Holy Spirit teaches us to follow him, to walk in his footprints. </em><strong><em>More than a master of doctrine, the Holy Spirit is a master of life</em></strong><em>. And he surely takes part in life as well as in knowledge, but within the broadest and most harmonious horizons of Christian existence.”</em></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">The Holy Spirit is our guide to the Truth, our guide to God the Father and God the Son. Pope Francis called the Holy Spirit the “master of life.” In those daily moments of struggle, agony, and decision-making, the pure and gentle Holy Spirit kindly guides us toward living life as a follower of Christ. St. Peter Damian similarly said, “As the soul is the life of the body, so the Holy Spirit is the life of our souls.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="to-be-filled">To be filled with the fruits and gifts of the Spirit</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Because the Holy Spirit is ever present in our souls, the Holy Spirit makes possible our daily actions rooted in the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. As Pope Francis continued in his 2014 Pentecost Sunday homily,&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class=""><em>“It is the Spirit who lets us speak with people in fraternal dialogue. The Portuguese Carmelite nun received a vision of St. Michael the Archangel in the 18th century. St. Michael urged Antonia to <a href="https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/devotions/chaplet-of-st-michael-the-archangel-386">make</a> nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels, promising his protection and the care of one angel from each of the Choirs. If you’re unfamiliar with the Divine Mercy Chaplet, it is commonly prayed daily at 3:00 p.m., the time at which Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday. They might be words you’ve never spoken aloud but resonate deep within your heart. This isn’t the kind of humility that Christ, the disciples, Mary, and the Saints have shown us! Instead, we pray that we desire a humility that exudes love and tenderness, that knows we are all created equal in the image of God, and that understands our service in this earthly life is to love others beyond everything else.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Sometimes humility is being so comfortable with yourself, the person God created you to be, that you don’t spend time or energy worrying so much about what others think about you. Instead, you might spend that time and energy thinking about others, loving them, and supporting them. Humility sometimes manifests as being comfortable in compassion for the sake of others.&nbsp;As Mother Teresa said, <meta charset="utf-8">“if you are humble, nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are.<meta charset="utf-8">” </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">What I believe is the hardest part about humility is the understanding that only God’s love will <a href="https://blessedisshe.net/blog/pray-litany-humility/">truly fulfill us</a>, not how the world looks at us. This sentiment is the heart of the litany.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Living this out, however, is no easy feat. I can name several of my own flaws and fears that hold me back in this virtue. But, I feel called to work on and pray about humility, and I believe this desire holds for most of us. It’s likely why this prayer for humility was written and has become quite popular in the last few decades. And, as James M. Barrie said, “Life is a long lesson in humility.”&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="" id="origing">Origin&nbsp;</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">While there were likely earlier versions of the Litany of Humility, the text that we pray with today is attributed to Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val (1865-1930). Known for his life of <a href="https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=9263">piety</a>, he was the Secretary of State to Pope Saint Pius X from 1903 to 1914.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">We also know from the <em>Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis</em> that Merry de Val’s Litany of Humility resonated with C.S. Lewis. To the friend who shared the litany with him, Lewis <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/devotionals/cs-lewis-daily/2153/10/01">wrote</a>,&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">“You did not know, did you, that all the temptations against which he pours forth these prayers I have long been exceeding conscious of?” – C.S. Each time I read over or pray this litany, a different line seems to stick out to me. I believe that is because the Litany of Humility is a prayer we reach for when we desire grace from Jesus but maybe don’t know why or how to ask for it.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="" id="daily-weekly-monthly">Daily, weekly, monthly&nbsp;</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">You could choose to start your day, week, or even the month by praying the litany. It’s a beautiful reminder that we fail often, but we can always ask for the grace to serve God and others with love each day.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3,"className":""} --> <h3 class="" id="during-Lent">During Lent</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"className":""} --> <p class="">Much like the ashes we receive on <a href="https://hallow.com/blog/ash-wednesday/">Ash Wednesday</a> each Lent, this prayer helps us acknowledge where we fall short as human beings. We recognize our desire to be loved by everyone, to be popular, to be successful, and we name our fears regarding how others view us in this life.
