You can find this prayer in the Litany Praylist in the Hallow App. We encourage you to pray the Litany with your Prayer Family for seven days. At the end of your prayer, please share any thoughts, reflections, or intentions from your heart to share with your Prayer Family. If you are unsure how to create a Prayer Family, we have a step-by-step guide for you to create one!

As we pray with our Prayer Families, let us ask for Mary’s intercession in protecting all human life. Let us pray for those who are suffering, those who need protection, those who need comfort, those who need healing, and those who need love. Let us pray that we may respect life from conception to natural death. Let us pray for heavenly grace on all of God’s children.

“Mary, pray for us.”

“Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Life” is used with permission. It’s easy to forget our spiritual goals when putting together our annual vision boards or quarterly life plans, but shouldn’t they actually be our number one goal, every year, every quarter, every month, and every day?

But how do we set goals for deepening our relationship with our creator?

Here are 5 simple steps we can take to evaluate where you are and where you want to go in your walk with the Lord. Once you have spent meditating on this, begin to write down what God is asking you to commit to this year.

Here are some ideas that might be relevant:

Committing to a consistent Bible study (either alone or in communion with others). There are so many Bible Study resources available both for free or at very reasonable costs. You can do these alone or as a group of friends (virtually or in person) for fellowship and communal spiritual growth.

Committing to daily prayer time. Don’t have a great daily prayer habit, yet? We at Hallow are here to help. Our January community challenge can guide you in progressing from a simple minute meditation to completing a Holy Hour over the course of the month. Come February, we will have tons of amazing content for Lent. We also have over 700 different meditations and prayers for whatever you are going through in your life. If you are already in a good rhythm, consider challenging yourself to grow deeper in prayer by trying some different prayer methods that aren’t already in your routine.

Commit to weekly/daily mass. Depending on where you live, in-person mass might not be an option, but as things begin to open up (and as you feel ready), begin to make a concerted effort to go back to mass. It has gotten easy to passively enjoy mass in the comfort of our homes, but reignite your love and need for the physical Eucharist. You also could add the goal to regularly attend (or watch a virtual) adoration. There is incredibly healing grace that can come from sitting with the True Presence of Christ on a consistent basis; it really fills your soul.

Commit to serving others. If you are able, volunteer in your community. Send a card to a family member who has been isolated. Consider supporting the church economically. One aspect of your spiritual goal should involve building the virtue of charity. Jesus calls us to give of ourselves to others in whatever way we can. Maybe this is the year to commit to becoming a Catechist or an usher. It could even be as simple as guiding your family closer to Sanctification through doing acts of service as a family. Listen for God to guide you towards how he wants you to better love your church and your neighbor.

Step 3: Create a plan for how to get there

Having aspirations and goals without a realistic plan for bringing them into reality is a recipe for regret and feeling unfulfilled at the end of the year. For progress to happen, you need to have a plan.

Write out exactly what you will do and when. Purchase any resources you need to make it happen (e.g., a Bible Study course, or physical journal) and schedule the time you want to spend each day in prayer or at church. We highly recommend adding blocks to your personal and work eCalendar. Customized Hallow push notification prayer reminders can help make sure that you don’t forget.

Whatever you do, make a plan and stick to that plan every day.

Step 4: Ask someone to hold you accountable

We were not meant to journey alone, God gave us His Church to support us and lift us up.

Telling someone you are going to do something and forcing yourself to check in with them is one of the easiest ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals.

Whether it is a spouse / significant other, family member, Spiritual director, or friend, having a person who knows your spiritual goals and wants to help you accomplish them will help you when life gets crazy and you want to give up or procrastinate

An accountability partner can also help point out resources that might be helpful for you in your walk with God, such as a book or journal technique. Check in with this person at least once a month and make sure that the check-ins are on your schedule.

Step 5: Set regular check-ins with yourself

Finally, as you check in with your accountability partner you also should set regular (ideally weekly) check-ins with yourself. If you messed up for a day or two, that’s okay, just get right back up and recommit yourself to your goals.

God knows we are not perfect. He just wants us to try to have a relationship with Him. We are all fallen, but with small daily steps, we can grow in Holiness, which is all He desires.

We hope this guide will help you in making your relationship with God your number one resolution this year and we encourage you to check out all of the resources we have in Hallow that can help support you on the journey. You can find our new Music section with over 100 songs and 14 albums available in the Meditate tab. From Catholic singer-songwriter Kat Hammock’s Hymns (exclusive to Hallow Music) to acoustic worship with Brother Isaiah to Harpa Dei's traditional chant, there is something for everyone. In prayer with music, we recommend starting with something you know or something that sounds interesting to you.

2. Take a few deep breaths.

If ever you are overwhelmed, you can let the words or notes of the music be your voice. Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself for the song's length to whatever it is God wants to show you. Depending on what you need at that moment, some words might stick out to you. Other times, the tune might carry you to a more peaceful place. Many of us are working from home these days, and music serves as a peaceful start, background, or break throughout the day. It helps you focus but isn’t distracting.

3. Listen to the melody and/or read the text.

If you are struggling to find a way to speak with God, start with a song you know. It might be “Be Thou My Vision” or “The First Noel” this Christmas. Find somewhere comfortable to sit or peaceful to walk and tune into the music. Notice the rhythm and note the lyrics of the song. As you begin to submerge yourself in the music, see if any of the words speak to you in a particular way. Think of this as imitating the practice of Lectio Divina with your chosen song.

4. Let the music lead you into a conversation with God.

Music can help bring focus and calm to your day, even during other forms of prayer. For example, we recommend listening to the instrumental music on the app, such as Sean Beeson’s Give Me Jesus album (a Hallow Original), during adoration. As you rest with the Blessed Sacrament, virtually or in person, be drawn deeper into prayer through familiar melodies that help you to focus on the presence of Our Lord.

We encourage you to turn to prayerful lyrics, such as those in the album Canticum Novum (2019) by CMI Chant, when you need to sing, cry, smile, or find peace.

5. Sing along (or don’t).

Lastly, remember praying with music doesn’t have to be so serious. You might find some of our music better suited for listening before bed or during a quiet moment in your day; the album In Prayer (2017) by ambient artist Salt of the Sound is great for this. With other songs, don’t be afraid to sing or hum along! Most days are one chapter, but we’ve combined a few to fit the 28 chapters of Matthew into the 25 days of Advent.

Each day, we’ll read a passage from the chapter of the day, reflect on it together, and then offer prompts for you to bring to God. There will be 5, 10, and 15-minute options to fit every schedule. You are welcome to read the entire chapter on your own, but it’s not required!

Why did we choose the Gospel of Matthew for Advent?

The Gospel of Matthew begins with the angel declaring “you shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.”

And the Gospel of Matthew ends with Jesus declaring, “I will be with you always, until the end of the age.”

From the first chapter to the last, the Gospel of Matthew reveals what God wants us to know: He is with us. In Advent, we prepare ourselves for the coming of God in three ways: at Christmas 2,000 years ago, into our lives today, and at the end of time.

That’s why, during Advent, we sing “O come, O come Emmanuel.” We pray: Come, God who is with us. Come into our hearts, come into our world. Transform us. Bring us closer to your Son. Breathe in us your Holy Spirit. Fill us with your grace to live out the sacrificial love you modeled for us. And at the end of our earthly life, bring us home to you.

This Advent, we hope to read the story of Jesus anew, in a way we haven’t done before yet on Hallow. We hope to see Jesus’ coming on Christmas in light of the whole picture – from his miraculous birth to his teachings, his death, and finally, to his triumphant Resurrection.

Week by Week

Week 1: Hope

We begin Advent as we light the first purple candle, which symbolizes hope. This candle is called the “Prophecy Candle” in reference to the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew, the author refers to the Old Testament over 100 times, reminding readers that all of salvation history has pointed towards Jesus from the beginning.

During this week in #pray25, we’ll pray through chapters 1-7. We begin with the angel announcing Jesus’ coming, witness the wisemen meeting the Holy Family, Jesus’ baptism and temptation in the desert, and end with Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. These chapters reveal who Jesus is: the long hoped for Messiah.

Week 2: Faith

This week, we light the second candle, called the “Bethlehem Candle.” This candle represents faith, reminding us of the faith of Mary and Joseph as they journeyed to Bethlehem. This week, we also begin the next section of Gospel of Matthew: Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. In these chapters (8-17), we witness great moments of faith: Jesus healing both physical and spiritual ailments, inviting Peter onto the water, feeding the 4,000, and asking Peter: “Who do you say I am?” We end the week with the Transfiguration, a moment of glory to again remind us that Jesus is not just a great prophet or teacher, but the Son of God.

Week 3: Joy

This week, the Church lights the rose-colored candle, which symbolizes joy. This week is meant to remind us of the joy the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy of being halfway through Advent. This candle is often called the “Shepherd’s Candle,” and to start off the week, we read about the Good Shepherd from Matthew chapter 18. Over the course of the week, we read through chapter 24, and we experience both the joy of discipleship and the humility discipleship calls us to.

Week 4: Peace

During the fourth week of Advent, we light the final candle, often called the “Angel’s Candle,” which symbolizes peace. As we begin the final week of Advent with chapter 25, Jesus describes how we will be judged in His kingdom, where the last are first and the first are last; a kingdom that ultimately will bring true peace. Then, in chapters 26 and 27, we witness Jesus’ final meal with his disciples and his Passion and Death.

It may seem strange to meditate on Jesus’ death so close to Christmas. But Jesus’ birth and life, death and resurrection cannot be separated from each other. When God sent his Son, he knew what was coming. He knew he had to suffer, but he also knew that through his suffering and death he’d bring about a greater joy – the joy of heaven opening up to all of us. The cross, then, though a cause for great sorrow, is also a great cause for hope, faith, joy, and peace.

And we celebrate this during the final two days of #pray25 as we pray with the final chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. In this chapter, we rejoice at the Resurrection, and then on Christmas Eve, we hear Jesus tell us “I am with you always, until the end of the age.” He is truly Emmanuel, God with us.

We hope that journeying through the Gospel of Matthew with Hallow this Advent draws you closer to God, and helps you celebrate with newfound joy on Christmas. We are so excited and grateful to pray with you.

Related Prayers

Advent Prayers

Thanksgiving Prayers

Christmas Prayers

Hail Mary Prayer

Our Father Prayer

[post_title] => 2020 Advent Challenge: Re-discover Christ through Scripture [post_excerpt] => Get to know Jesus through the Gospel of Matthew.
