The meaning of these words can be hard to wrap your mind around. Yet the Eucharist not only sits at the center of our faith but represents an integral component of our prayer lives.

What Is the Eucharist?

The word eucharist (pronounced YOO-kuh-rist) comes from the Greek word eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving. The Catholic Church describes the Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life.”

Pope Paul VI, in his 1965 encyclical Mysterium Fidei, wrote:

"The Mystery of Faith, that is, the ineffable gift of the Eucharist that the Catholic Church received from Christ, her Spouse, as a pledge of His immense love, is something that she has always devoutly guarded as her most precious treasure"

In more practical terms, the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ. In addition to being the source and summit of Christian life, it’s also the center of the Catholic Mass in the Liturgy of the Eucharist (which follows the Liturgy of the Word–readings, Gospel, homily and intercessions).

"Communion" or "Holy Communion" are often used synonymously with "Eucharist." Holy Communion sometimes refers to the entire action of receiving the sacrament, while "Eucharist" is normally reserved for the sacrament itself. The USCCB itself makes reference both to receiving Communion and distributing Communion.

In either case, it’s critical to grasp the concept of Real Presence.

Real Presence - The Actual Body and Blood of Jesus

Catholics believe that the Eucharist is the actual Body and Blood of Jesus.

Not a symbol or a ritual to remind us of Jesus’s sacrifice. His genuine, true Body and Blood.

How could that possibly be?

During Mass, the priest consecrates bread and wine. The bread is usually round “hosts,” or wafers consisting of just flour and water. Liturgies must use wine from grapes.

The prayers that a priest offers during consecration transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus. This occurs by the power of the Holy Spirit through a process called transubstantiation.

In transubstantiation, the substance of the bread and wine is transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. The accidents, or appearance, of the bread and wine retain their familiar hallmarks–the host still looks like host and not flesh; the wine still smells and tastes like wine.

But it is no longer bread and wine, despite its appearance.

The Eucharist in the Bible

Where do we gain our understanding of the Eucharist?

First and foremost, we learn about Jesus’s Body and Blood…from Jesus.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Matthew 26:17-30

In John 6:53-57, Jesus further tells us that “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”

In the Luke account of the road to Emmaus, the two men traveling recognize Jesus only when he breaks bread at the table.

“Their eyes were opened,” Luke tells us. When we spend time with Jesus’s Body, the Blessed Sacrament, our eyes can be opened, too. That’s why the Eucharist is so important to our prayer life.

And it comes directly from Jesus.

Understanding the Eucharist

Jesus knew the mystery of His real presence in the Eucharist would be a hard teaching to accept; John’s Gospel reveals that this very teaching was the reason many stopped following him:

As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”

Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

John 6:66-69

The Church invites us to respond with the same faith of Peter. Though it may be difficult to understand and believe, when we do, we realize what an incredible gift the Eucharist is.

The Eucharist and The Last Supper

After Jesus washed His disciples’ feet (which we recognize during Holy Thursday), commissioning them to lives of servant leadership, He instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist:

Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.

Luke 22:19-20

The Mass itself traces its origins to the Last Supper. Priests speak these words from Jesus every Sunday as they consecrate the bread and wine, shortly before we are invited to receive Jesus.

After Mass, Jesus’s Body, as consecrated hosts of bread, may remain. Jesus’s Body stays in the tabernacle where it can be used for Adoration.

Adoration–Spending Time in Prayer with the Blessed Sacrament.

In Matthew 28:20, Jesus tells us “I will be with you always.” This is certainly true in the Eucharist and one of the reasons why many Catholics pray in Adoration.

The practice of Adoration dates back to the early Church but surged in popularity during the Middle Ages. It remains an important part of the prayer life of millions of Catholics.

The USCCB considers adoration “the natural consequence of the Eucharistic celebration.”

For Eucharistic Adoration, the Eucharist is sometimes displayed in a monstrance, a metal stand that resembles a sunburst that holds a consecrated host. Other times, it is kept in a ciborium (the dish from which hosts are distributed during Holy Communion) inside of a tabernacle. A candle signals the presence of Jesus.

Either way, that concept is the same: Being physically present with Jesus, who is physically present with us in the Eucharist.

Churches that offer perpetual Adoration often have volunteers sign up for one-hour time slots so that someone is always present to adore Jesus.

Prayers to Say During Adoration

There is no exact “right” prayer (or way to pray) during Adoration.

Fr. Josh of Ascension Press explains that Adoration is about imitating God:

“We want to imitate our Savior, Jesus Christ. Any time we spend time with people, we become more like the people we hang out with,” he said. “The more we spend time with Jesus, the more we’re going to be like Jesus.

Consider that as a starting point: Merely being with Christ in the Eucharist helps us draw closer to Him, regardless of the prayers we offer.

Still, Adoration can be a powerful opportunity for transformative prayer. Adoration can involve any of the following prayers or meditations:

Prayers to Say Before Receiving Holy Communion

We most commonly encounter the Eucharist during Mass. There are some prayers built into the structure of the liturgy to help us prepare to receive Holy Communion.

Shortly before we are called to receive the Eucharist, we recite the following prayer, inspired by the words of the centurion in Matthew’s Gospel: “Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

The previous English translation, which was revised in 2010, began with the phrase “Lord, I am not worthy to receive You…”

Both convey the same meaning: a small act of confession and humility to cleanse our souls and prepare us to intimately experience Christ.

When you approach the priest or lay person distributing Holy Communion (known as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion), showing a sign of reverence is appropriate such as a bow or kneeling.

You may also say any number of simple prayers. These should be short and easy to remember since you’ll be standing or walking to receive the Eucharist (and probably not able to read prayers):

Consider trying any of the following:

"I love You, Lord. May the Eucharist transform me."

“Thank You for the sacrifice You made. I love You with all my heart.”

“I’m truly sorry for all my sins. Please fill me with Your grace.”

Prayers to Say After Receiving Holy Communion

The Roman Missal gives broad guidelines for post-Communion prayer, saying that those who have received the Eucharist can “praise and pray to God in their hearts.”

All prayers in the moments following Communion are said silently. Similar to prayers offered before receiving Communion, prayers afterward can be short and free-flowing. Some examples of simple Communion prayers to say after receiving are:

“Thank you, Lord, for this most precious gift."

“I’m eternally grateful for your sacrifice. Strengthen me to do Your will.”

“Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me;O good Jesus hear me;Within your wounds hide me; separated from you, let me never be; From the evil one protect me; At the hour of my death, call me; And close to you bid me; That with your saints, I may be praising you forever and ever. Amen.” (Anima Christi - St. Ignatius of Loyola)

The time after Communion can be a dialogue with God, and you may find yourself doing less talking and more listening.

These incredibly intimate moments with our Lord don’t require strict prayers and structures. Be with God. Feel His presence. Listen to God’s call.

The power of the Eucharist can overcome any inability we have to offer the exact right prayer!

If you’re unable to receive the Eucharist, you can consider praying the Act of Spiritual Communion:

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.

Anyone who’s spent time in Catholic schools in any capacity–teacher, student, volunteer, coach or administrator–knows that community is at the heart of Catholic education.

In our shared witness for Christ, we uplift each other personally, help each other grow academically and foster school communities rooted in Christian values.

In May, Catholic school communities around the world rallied around the pillar of prayer, deepening their faith lives while participating in Hallow’s Let’s Pray Giveaway.

The contest challenged schools to draw closer to God by praying through the Hallow app. Every prayer, from students, teachers and even parents, counted toward each school’s total. The school with the most total prayers completed would capture the top prize: $10,000.

“I am so excited that our little school is in the top 3,” said an administrator at one of the contest’s finalists. “ Regardless of the outcome, I am so excited that our school is doing so well. Honestly, our prayer life has increased tremendously.”

Ultimately, St. James Millstadt School took home the top prize of $10,000, but all the participating schools ended the contest with the reward of a deepened prayer life within their community.

Other honorable mention schools include:

Aquinas Academy (Gibsonia, Pa.)

Frassati Catholic High School (Spring, Texas)

Our Lady of Hope (Potomac Falls, Va.)

St. John of the Cross (Western Springs, Ill.)

Lumen Christi (Martin, Australia)

The number of prayers completed among these schools grew +489% from April to May. Schools that finished in the Top 10 completed five times as many prayers in May compared to April.

With the school year drawing to a close, the renewed focus on prayer life heading into summer break can help students and parents stay close to God at a time when many routines get disrupted.

It can be easy to feel close to God in our best moments–when things go well, when we have occasions to celebrate or feel connected to people around us who uplift us.

In our challenging moments–when we are lonely, sick, overwhelmed or scared–we might feel distanced from God.

God makes it clear to us that in these moments when we feel weak, or whatever reason, God can be our source of strength, gently guiding us toward peace.

In Psalm 50:15, God tells us, “Call upon Me on the day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor Me.”

In our worst moments of weakness, God is ready to be by our side. His presence–and the strength He offers–may take a form you don’t expect.

We Can’t Endure Our Weakness Alone

Weakness is a universal human experience since original sin. But in our weakness, we’re reminded of our reliance on God.

In a June 2015 morning meditation, Pope Francis reminded us of this–and the importance of recognizing our weakness.

“One who thinks he is strong, who thinks he can do it on his own, is at least naïve and, in the end, is a man defeated by so many weaknesses which he carries within himself,” he said, “Weakness leads us to ask the Lord for help.”

God’s Strength Working Through Others

A famous Christian parable known as The Drowning Man (or Man on the Roof) tells the story of a man who repeatedly ignores rescuers offering him help because he believes God will help him. Ultimately, he dies and asks God why He never came to help Him.

As the parable (and popular homily joke) goes, God replies, “I sent two boats and a helicopter to rescue you. What more did you want?”

It’s a simple reminder that God is at work in the world around us through the Holy Spirit. When we pray to God for strength, we ought to open our eyes to the support He helps procure for us: trusted medical professionals, licensed therapists, support groups and other organizations to lift us up when during moments of need.

While God is at work through those around us, prayer is not a standalone solution for severe mental or physical illness, which is why it’s important to reach out to professionals in your area who are equipped to address these issues.

Of course, the Church believes in true miracles, which has been Hallow’s focus during the Easter season.

Prayers for Strength for the Day

Beginning each day in prayer is an excellent habit for our faith lives, and this can include asking God for strength for the upcoming day.

Here’s a simple, one-line prayer given to us by Pope Francis that you can pray to ask God for strength each day. You can pray it any time on its own or before other prayers or meditations.

“Lord, I know that in my weakness, I can do nothing without Your help.”

The following is another short prayer for strength to begin each day:

“As I begin my day, I turn to You, Lord, and ask for strength. Be my rock whenever the day shakes me. Guide me through the day as I navigate choppy waters that might come my way. Empower me to speak up when I need to, even if my voice shakes. Help me to feel tall in situations that make me small. Be the light that empowers me in darkness. Most of all, help me feel Your loving embrace this day and all days. Amen.”

Prayers for Strength during a Difficult Time

One of the best prayers for strength during challenging times comes to us from one of the great Church Fathers.

St. Augustine of Hippo, in Confessions, gave us a prayer for strength that has withstood the test of time and is as meaningful today as it was more than 1500 years ago.

This prayer reminds us that we are always God’s children, whom God loves and protects, and that challenging moments are fleeting compared to the promise of eternal salvation in heaven.

O Lord our God, grant us to trust in your overshadowing wings. Protect us beneath them and bear us up. You will carry us as little children, even to our grey-headed age you will carry us still. When you are our strong security, that is strength indeed. But when our security is in ourselves, that is but weakness. Our good abides ever in your keeping, but in diverting our steps from you we have grown perverse. Let us turn back to you at last, Lord, that we be not overturned. Unspoiled, our good abides with you, for you are yourself our good. We need not fear to find no home again because we have fallen away from it; while we are absent our home falls not to ruins, for our home is your eternity.

Opportunity to have your miracle story featured on Hallow!

Given how many folks have found inspiration from the new Daily Miracle meditations on Hallow, we’d love to continue to add new stories after Easter and throughout the year, but we need your help!

Over the past few years, one of the most awe-inspiring parts of getting to work on the Hallow mission has been hearing from you all the stories of God’s miraculous power in your lives. We’ve heard stories of lives being saved through prayer, addictions overcome, mental or physical illnesses healed, and countless more. This is what we need your help with. As the continuation of the Daily Miracle series on Hallow we want to help you to share your stories.

In this new series, for the first time ever, you’ll have the opportunity to send in recordings or written scripts for us to feature as a part of the Daily Miracle on Hallow. Your story will be shared with millions around the world to help inspire faith and hope in God in our lives.

If you’d like to share a story of God intervening in your life, please submit a recording or written script of your story to us using this form here. Please see more details and instructions below.

More Details on How to Craft Your Story

Steps to record

Please choose a story in your life about a miracle or about God’s intervention - it can be anything from God healing someone after prayer, a particularly powerful moment in prayer or a vision, a prayer that was answered, a moment of surrender, or anything that you think could inspire faith and hope in others

Outline and craft the story - please try to structure it in a way with a clear beginning, middle and end. Start with a bit about the time and setting before the miracle, build to a climax that is the miracle or intervention, and then close with the effect that it had on your life and others. It should be about 3-8 minutes in length. See an example below.

Record the script - record in a quiet place, ideally using wired headphones as the microphone or some other high-quality microphone. Please open by introducing yourself with your name, where you live, and how long you’ve been a Hallow member. If you’d rather keep it anonymous that’s completely okay, just share how long you’ve been a member. An easy way to record will be just with the voice memo app (instructions here) on your phone.

[or] Write a script - recording is preferred, but if you’d rather write and have our guides record the story that is okay too. Just simply submit the text of the story in the form above.

Submit - fill out this form here. Enter your name, email, and a brief description of yourself. You can keep anonymous if you’d like. Upload your file or written script directly to the form and click submit.

Example Stories:

Sample Story #1

Hello, my name is Kyle and this is my miracle story.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

After our first two children, it seemed like we wouldn’t be able to have any more. After over four years of waiting, God still had not given us a third child and we really wanted more.

Around this time, we went on a pilgrimage to Rome. On October 22, we went to a Church called Sant’ Agostino at the Madonna del Parto which was a favorite prayer spot of John Paul II. It’s a common tradition for those who struggle to conceive to pray here and many people come back to give thanks. In fact, the walls are covered with pictures of babies from those whose prayers have been answered.

Shortly after our time at Sant’ Augustino, we found out that we were expecting. We were overjoyed. The even more incredible part is that my wife delivered the baby on October 22, the feast of John Paul II, exactly one year later from when we prayed.

When we prayed at Sant’ Agostino, we promised to come back to give thanks if God answered our prayers and we did so on March 24. During our time in the Church, we asked for another child. It has been over three years since our last one.

Later on, my wife sat me down and told me that she was pregnant. I looked at the date and couldn’t believe it – it was March 24th. She told me she was pregnant one year to the date that we prayed for another child at Sant’ Agostino.

God truly works in mysterious ways and sometimes really wants to make his providence known in our lives. God is so good. And our children have been such a clear reminder of this in our own lives.

Sample Story #2

Hello, my name is Joe and this is my miracle story.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

A few years ago my wife’s cousin was struggling with depression and drug abuse. He was in his 20s and had been struggling for a long time. And then, he went missing. His family was looking everywhere for him and couldn’t find him. They searched his house and his neighborhood but couldn’t find him anywhere. They tracked his credit cards to try to find out any sort of clue about his location, but nothing showed up.

At this point, the only thing the family could do was prayed. My wife and I sat down and prayed the rosary for her cousin and for his safe return.

Ten minutes after we prayed, we heard they found him.

In the middle of rural Texas, a man was driving to work. During his drive, he felt a strong urge from the Lord to pull off the road and drive down a dirt road that he’d never driven on before. On this dirt road, he found my wife’s cousin who was about to end his life. The man talked him out of it and connected him with his family.

He’s now back home with his family and receiving rehab. It totally changed the way our family looked at pray and the power of God in our lives.

Sample Story #3

In 2009, Bonnie Engstrom was expecting her third child. As her due date approached, everything was going smoothly. Like she did with her other children, Bonnie decided to give birth at home with a midwife. On June 16, 2010 she went into labor. Everything went smoothly for several hours but as the baby began to pass through the birth canal, they realized the umbilical cord had developed into a knot. Oxygen was cut off to the child. Upon arrival, tragically, the baby didn’t move and didn’t cry. He had no pulse. He was stillborn.

Bonnie and her friend present at the birth immediately began to ask Fulton Sheen to pray for the baby. Archbishop Fulton Sheen lived from 1895 to 1979. He was ordained a priest in 1919, and was well known for his television show, Life Is Worth Living, for which he won an Emmy. Bonnie had long been a fan of Archbishop Sheen’s who had grown up in the same area of Illinois as her.

While Bonnie and her friend prayed, the midwife gave the baby CPR, and the family called 911.

When the paramedics came to the house, they confirmed that the baby had no sign of a heartbeat.

They rushed him to the hospital. Upon arrival, the child still had no pulse.

Using a sonogram, the child’s heart still showed no movement.

The doctors asked that the baby receive five more minutes of care before declaring him dead.

After this time, the team took their hands off of the child.

And it was then… at this moment… after 61 minutes without oxygen…that his heart started beating.

No one can live without oxygen for 61 minutes, especially a newborn baby. The doctors expected severe organ failure. They didn’t know how long he would live, maybe a night or a weekend, but they believed he certainly wouldn’t make it a week. And yet, the child continued to progress. While promising, the Engstroms were told that the best-case scenario would be that their child would have an extreme form of cerebral palsy. He would be blind, and never be able to walk, talk, or feed himself.

The requests for Archbishop Sheen’s intercession continued. Bonnie, who kept a blog, wrote on the day of his birth that if the child lived it would be the sole result of the intercession of Archbishop Sheen. Soon hundreds of people from around the world began to pray for the child.

Defying all odds, the child continued to grow and improve. To this day, against all scientific explanation, the child has developed normally and shows no signs of his traumatic beginnings. His name is James Fulton Engstrom, named after his intercessor. In 2019, Pope Francis approved this occurrence as a miracle with attribution to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Venerable Fulton Sheen is now on the path to sainthood.

Religious Happy Easter Images

In theory, all images of Easter have religious connotations: Jesus's Resurrection--which Easter celebrates--is the cornerstone of Christianity.

However, some Easter images that focus on bunnies and baskets can sometimes feel a bit removed from the meaning of the holiday.

These simple Happy Easter images should convey the religious significance of the day while embracing the festive colors common in Happy Easter images.

Hallow is excited to launch a new series of prayer resources in conjunction with the release of “Fr. Stu,” starring Mark Wahlberg.

The movie follows the life of Fr. Stuart Long, who spent time as a high school and college football player, professional boxer and Hollywood actor before following a call to the priesthood.

“Fr. Stu” hits theaters on April 13, and Hallow is pleased to partner exclusively with the film to bring some of Fr. Stu’s favorite prayers to the Hallow app.

Many sacraments have outward, visible signs that announce and celebrate them. The sacrament of penance is not one of them.

A photo of a newly baptized baby with godparents captures a child’s baptism, much like how a picture of a teenager standing with the bishop preserves the moment a young person is confirmed.

Then there are weddings, and all that comprises them, from the announcements to the invitations, the joyful mass, the gifts, the reception and the beautiful memories.

We often want our entire network of family, friends and members of our faith community to at least be aware of these sacraments in our lives, even if we can’t invite them all to the celebration.

Our hearts are filled with pride. With joy.

The sacrament of penance, also called “reconciliation,” is different in this aspect. You won’t go to someone’s home and see a photo on their mantle from their first (or any!) penance. No invitations will arrive announcing the date and time that a loved one plans to go through reconciliation.

With the sacrament of penance, the experience is different but no less important than other sacraments. Like other sacraments, its roots come from the Bible:

Now this is the message that we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” while we continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin. If we say, “We are without sin,” we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 1:5-10

Confession: Don’t Be Intimidated

When we think about our sinfulness, we might feel embarrassed or alone. It’s not something we want to share with others. We may feel intimidated or reluctant to share our sins with the priest.

If you’re nervous or uneasy about going to confession, remember these three things:

It doesn’t matter if it’s been a long time (or a short time), God is still happy you’re there.

Our God is a God of mercy. God wants to forgive us.

God, not the priest present in the confessional, is the one doing actually absolving your sins.

Priests are bound by a canon law concept known as the “seal of the confessional,” which forbids them from sharing confessions under any circumstance.

If you’re worried about inconveniencing or bothering the priest, take comfort in the beautiful description of the sacrament from Pope John Paul II:

“[Confession] is, without doubt, the most difficult and delicate, the most exhausting and demanding, but also one of the most beautiful and consoling ministries of the priest.”

In other words, it’s hard but rewarding work–exactly what priests are called to do.

Why You Should Go to Confession

God absolving our sins helps us draw nearer to God. Sin distances us from God; the sacrament of reconciliation bridges that gap and better unites us with God.

In our confession, the priest may suggest ways to avoid sinning in the future, helping us live holier lives each day.

As the USCCB explains, penance also “challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us.”

In this way, going to confession can be seen as a selfless act: When we experience God’s love and forgiveness, we’re better prepared to extend those gifts to those around us.

Finding a Time for Confession

Churches usually offer a scheduled time each week for parishioners to receive the sacrament of confession. At smaller churches, you may have to email the pastor to schedule a time.

If you’re not comfortable going to your own parish for confession, you may explore other churches in your area. It’s better to go to confession at a different church than not to go at all.

If you’re traveling, some airports have small chapels staffed by Catholic priests. These chapels provide an opportunity for confession during busy work times or before embarking on a big family trip or holiday: great times to receive absolution for your sins.

Priests at these chapels generally are aware that people in the airport have flights to catch, so you can receive the sacrament expediently.

Group Reconciliation Services

Some parishes will offer communal reconciliation services, especially during the season of Lent.

These services provide an opportunity to participate in the sacrament of penance, in the context of the larger parish community.

Instead of showing up alone to confession, there’s an entire group of fellow parishioners gathered to do the same. Strength in numbers!

While the services invite members of the Church to gather together, they still offer full, individual private confessions. Read the Archdiocese of Chicago’s approach to group reconciliation.

Examples of Sins to Say at Confession

Your sins are entirely personal. There’s no exact guide for what you ought to confess. No universal playbook for the sins you need to atone for.

The best guide is your conscience.

Spend time examining your conscience to take stock of moments when you’ve missed the mark, distancing yourself from God, the Church and those around you.

The 10 Commandments can provide a helpful framework for prompting you to think about ways you’ve sinned. It’s best to consider them broadly and not literally.

For example, with “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” you may have never committed murder, but have you been violent or abusive? Have you injured others with your deeds or words?

Don’t obsess over identifying every small thing that could possibly be considered a sin. Prayerfully reflect on major actions that could be considered sinful through the lens of the 10 Commandments. As you do this, remember God’s love and mercy for you.

When you’ve identified a time and place for your confession, and you’ve given some time to reflect on your sins, you’re ready to go to the confessional.

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—Franciscan University of Steubenville has partnered with Hallow, a Catholic prayer and meditation app, to provide the University community with premium prayer content to help deepen their spiritual lives.

Through the new partnership, current Franciscan University students, faculty, and staff receive free premium access to Hallow and its wide-ranging audio library of Catholic faith-based meditations and prayers. University alumni and Steubenville Conferences’ participants will also benefit from special offers to access Hallow.

“We are excited to be the premier Catholic university to partner with Hallow. This exclusive partnership provides an excellent new resource for our students, employees, and friends to foster prayer and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ as his joyful disciples,” said Franciscan University President Father Dave Pivonka, TOR. “The beautiful, faith-filled content is an inspiring tool for Lent and beyond.”

“We’re incredibly humbled to be able to partner with one of the leading Catholic universities in the world and to help share the power of prayer and the Church’s spirituality with the Franciscan community,” said Hallow CEO and Co-Founder Alex Jones.

Easter is more than just the most important celebration on the liturgical calendar.

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of all Christianity.

Referencing Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “‘If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.’ The Resurrection above all constitutes the confirmation of all Christ's works and teachings.”

This is why we rejoice. Easter is everything. Jesus’s death frees us from sin and his resurrection ensures new life for us.

Easter calls for celebration, certainly, but it’s also an important time for prayer.

Before baskets, egg hunts and the scramble to get to Mass, the morning can be a great opportunity to draw near to God with a simple prayer to begin the day.

Use these simple words to offer up a quiet moment to God before the Easter festivities begin in earnest.

Heavenly Father, our hearts are so full of joy today. You feel so near to us on this most special celebration of Easter. May the love we feel this morning stay with us the rest of the day and always. Amen.

As we begin this day celebrating Jesus’s victory over death, we pray, O Heavenly Father, that You be near to us and continue to guide us until we join in the unending celebration in heaven. In Your name we pray. Amen.

I offer up this morning to you, Lord, and pray in gratitude for the gift of salvation that Jesus won for us. As the day gets busier, may I never stray far from the quiet peace I feel in my heart right now, knowing how deep Your love is for me. Amen.

Easter Dinner Prayer

Unlike Christmas, where many traditions call for a big dinner feast on Christmas Eve, most celebratory Easter meals take place on Easter Sunday (perhaps partly because the Easter Vigil takes place on Saturday night!)

Whether you’re planning a big Easter dinner, pulling out all the stops for an Easter brunch, or enjoying a simple meal in the peace of a quiet home, mealtime is a great way to remain prayerful on this most holy day.

Here are some suggestions for simple Easter meal prayers you can pray before indulging in your Easter feast:

God, please bless this delicious food, along with the hands that harvested and prepared it. May it nourish our bodies and souls and help lead us to the amazing heavenly banquet that Jesus’s victory over death promises us. Amen.

On this Easter Day, we celebrate the empty tomb and Jesus’s resurrection but think also of our brothers and sisters in need, who may not eat today. We lift them up as we pray in Jesus’s name. Amen.

God, who is the source of all the good in our lives, we ask You to bless us. We gather at this table as family and friends, united in love of You. We are filled with gratitude for the gift of this meal and the many gifts you’ve given us. May we carry with us tomorrow the joy that we feel today, sharing Your love and building Your kingdom here on earth. Amen.

After Jesus was resurrected, he commissioned his disciples and reminded them that he was with them always. Jesus calls us, as well. And He's here with us now, too. May this meal give us strength and courage to follow God’s call in our own lives. Amen.

Heavenly Creator, we lift up these gifts to You, grateful for the gift of life. We give thanks for this meal as we pray for peace in our world and the renewal of society. Amen.

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

When you’re all done with dinner, consider closing the day with night prayer.

Easter Prayers for Kids

In the weeks before Easter, chocolate, plastic Easter eggs, baskets, candy, cards and more fill the shelves of grocery stores.

However, if our children’s only experience of Easter is the Easter Bunny and the gifts it brings, they’ll completely miss the true meaning and importance of Easter.

You can celebrate Easter with baskets of treats and hearts filled with love of God. And it doesn’t require elaborate prayers. Pray one of these simple prayers with your kids to keep Jesus at the center of the day:

Jelly Bean Prayer: Red is for the blood you gave, and black is for the empty grave. Yellow is for the shining sun, white is for the new life begun. Green is for the grass and trees and purple is for your majesty. Orange is for the edge of night, and pink is for the morning light. Amen!

Jesus, thank You for your sacrifice. Jesus, thank You for my life. Today is Easter so we pray, That we’ll join you in heaven someday.

Today is a very special Sunday. We thank you, God, for all the love You’ve given us and for the gift of Jesus. On this Easter, we pray in Your name. Amen.

Bunnies remind us of all the animals You made, and all the beautiful things You created. We love you, God, more than any chocolate, candy or toy. We ask for Your Easter blessing on this special day. Amen.

Short, Simple Easter Prayers

There are many great ways to draw nearer to God on Easter through prayer. The Rosary and Lectio Divina are wonderful options for Easter prayer.

If you’re short on time but are still looking for ways to connect with God on Easter, here are some short Easter prayers to consider:

God, may we feel the warm embrace of your love on this sacred day. May the glory of Jesus’s resurrection remind us that with You, nothing is impossible or without hope. We pray in Your name. Amen.

On this holy day, and in this season of renewal, we pray in thanksgiving for the many blessings You give us. May our words and deeds today, and always, serve as reminders of the transformative power of Your love. Amen.

Lord, thank You for this Easter celebration and all the gifts you give us. Amen!

Jesus has been raised to new life. Alleluia! Thank you, God, for the gift of your Son. Amen.

Catholic Easter Prayers

Here are some prayers from various prominent Catholic leaders to consider during Easter:

Today, as pilgrims in search of hope, we cling to you, Risen Jesus. We turn our backs on death and open our hearts to you, for you are Life itself.

Pope Francis, 2020

It is only right, with all the powers of our heart and mind, to praise You Father and Your Only-Begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Father, by Your wondrous condescension of Loving-Kindness toward us, Your servants, You gave up Your Son. Dear Jesus You paid the debt of Adam for us to the Eternal Father by Your Blood poured forth in Loving-Kindness. You cleared away the darkness of sin by Your magnificent and radiant Resurrection. You broke the bonds of death and rose from the grave as a Conqueror. You reconciled Heaven and earth. Our life had no hope of Eternal Happiness before You redeemed us. Your Resurrection has washed away our sins, restored our innocence and brought us joy. How inestimable is the tenderness of Your Love!

Saint Gregory's Easter Prayer

Dear brothers and sisters, Easter does not work magic. Just as the Israelites found the desert awaiting them on the far side of the Red Sea, so the Church, after the resurrection, always finds history filled with joy and hope, grief and anguish. And yet, this history is changed, it is marked by a new and eternal covenant, it is truly open to the future. For this reason, saved by hope, let us continue our pilgrimage, bearing in our hearts the song that is ancient and yet ever new: “Let us sing to the Lord: glorious his triumph!”.

Pope Benedict XVI, 2010

Blessed are you, O Mary, silent witness of Easter! You, O Mother of the Crucified One now risen, who at the hour of pain and death kept the flame of hope burning, teach us also to be, amongst the incongruities of passing time, convinced and joyful witnesses of the eternal message of life and love brought to the world by the Risen Redeemer

Divine Mercy Chaplet

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a popular Catholic prayer that is especially meaningful around Easter.

The Divine Mercy Chaplet has its roots in 20th century Poland, when Jesus appeared to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun.

Rosary beads are required, though the prayers said are different than the traditional rosary.

The period of time from Good Friday to Divine Mercy Sunday (the first Sunday following Easter) is when many Catholics will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
